Classify what feels slow before changing settings
A low or uneven frame rate is not the same symptom as delayed movement from a Bluetooth pad or a TV processing delay. Keep a short note of platform, storefront, game version, controller connection, display mode and when the delay occurs. Supergiant's support guide has separate branches for PC performance, mouse/controller input and console display settings.
| Symptom | Start with the official branch | Don't conclude yet |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy frames or tearing on PC | Verify files, close background apps, check overlays; try Low graphics or toggle Fullscreen/VSync | That a single average FPS number proves the frame pacing cause |
| Controller not detected or stops | Restart with the pad connected; on Steam, test the opposite Steam Input setting; use one controller | That every controller or layout is supported |
| Switch/Switch 2 feels delayed on TV | Check battery and TV Game Mode; on Switch 2 check ALLM; lower in-game Dead Zone one step | That PC Steam Input instructions apply to console |
| Steam Deck fails to launch or shows missing textures | Use the Deck-specific file verification and stable system-update path | That Windows compatibility steps are the correct first fix |

PC performance checks in a low-risk order
Supergiant's Windows/Mac support section recommends checking graphics drivers and verifying installation if files may be damaged. Its performance branch then suggests closing other programs, trying Low graphics, toggling Fullscreen and/or VSync, and manually selecting a graphics device when a system has more than one. These are diagnostic comparisons, not measured performance gains.
- Record Windows or macOS, launcher, build, display mode, graphics device and the exact scene/symptom. Avoid comparing a crowded fight with a menu screen as if conditions were identical.
- Verify the game files through the launcher. On Steam use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity; on Epic use Manage > Verify.
- Close background programs and temporarily test overlays off. Change only one display option at a time: Low graphics, Fullscreen, VSync, or the chosen graphics device.
- Repeat the same scene and record whether the symptom changed, stayed the same or moved to another symptom. Restore settings that did not help.
- If the issue persists, use the exact platform-specific Supergiant support path and include the game version and relevant log; do not treat community reports as verified fixes.
Controller and console branches are different
For PC controller detection, the developer's support page says restart with the controller connected, try the opposite Steam Input state and limit the test to one connected controller. For Switch and Switch 2 TV delay, it instead calls out display Game Mode, Switch 2 ALLM where supported, and the in-game Dead Zone. The Switch 2 120 Hz instructions require a compatible display and the correct console output settings; they do not assert that every panel or mode will reach 120 fps.
| Platform | Documented next checks | Scope limit |
|---|---|---|
| Windows/Mac via Steam | One controller; compare Steam Input enabled vs disabled; toggle VSync if input lag | No instruction to install third-party remappers |
| Steam Deck | Update on Stable; verify game files; if launch fails, try the developer's Proton guidance | Proton workaround is a launch branch, not a general performance preset |
| Switch/Switch 2 | Controller battery, TV Game Mode; Switch 2 ALLM; try a lower Dead Zone | Display features depend on TV and console model |
| Xbox / PS5 | Use the relevant console/display support branch and current system output settings | Do not apply PC-only settings or assume cross-platform save support |

Escalate with enough detail to reproduce it
Supergiant's support guide requests the platform and, where applicable, log or system details. Keep a report narrow: exact build, store, hardware class, controller connection, display settings, test sequence and whether each change altered the same symptom. Avoid posting personal account identifiers in a public forum.
- Separate rendering stutter from input lag and TV delay in the report title.
- Include the platform-specific steps already tried and their observed outcomes; label an untested suggestion as untested.
- For player discussion, compare reports only when platform and version match. Use Supergiant support for account/save-sensitive cases.

Before you play
- I identified rendering, controller or display delay as separate symptoms.
- I used the platform-specific branch and changed one setting at a time.
- I recorded the build and repeated conditions instead of inferring a benchmark result.
Frequently asked questions
Should I disable VSync for every input problem?
No. Supergiant lists toggling VSync as a possible PC check for input lag or display behavior; compare the same setup and restore it if there is no improvement.
Does the Switch 2 120 Hz option guarantee 120 fps?
No. The official instructions describe supported output on compatible displays and console settings. This guide has not measured frame rate or verified a display.
Can I use Steam Input instructions on Xbox or Switch?
No. Those instructions are for PC Steam. Use the support section for your actual platform.
