Use the Generator meter as the source of truth
Overdrive trades Generator stress for extra heat. The linked community-maintained reference reports a default one heat-level increase and default stress rates of +4 points/hour active and −2 points/hour inactive. It also describes technology modifiers and scenario events; therefore these defaults are not a universal live-build guarantee.
Enter the current meter, not a remembered value. If your scenario or research changes the rate, replace the default with the rate documented for your run or calculate from observed meter change over a known interval. This is arithmetic support, not a recommendation to use Overdrive.
- Pause and read the stress percentage in the original game's Generator panel.
- Enter the planned Overdrive hours and planned off-hours in the worksheet. Use the default rates only if your scenario has no modifier you know about.
- Treat a projected value near 100% as a stop signal: switch Overdrive off earlier and check the real meter. Do not rely on a last-hour correction.
- If you have researched a stress modifier or are in a scenario with Generator flaws/events, enter the rate that applies to your run only if you can verify it; otherwise leave the estimate as unknown and watch the panel directly.
- After turning Overdrive off, verify the meter is actually falling. Then check the temperature overlay and the buildings that need heat rather than leaving Overdrive on by habit.
| Your observation | Interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Stress at 0%, no known modifiers | Community default estimate may be useful for rough planning | Use 4/2 only as an estimate, keep the Generator panel open |
| Stress already above 0% | Only remaining margin matters | Enter the live meter; reduce planned active time or add recovery |
| Scenario flaw / research modifier / event | Default rates may not apply | Use a verified scenario-specific rate or do not rely on the estimate |
| Projected stress reaches 100% | The simplified interval reaches the stated critical threshold | Turn Overdrive off earlier; re-check meter and event text |

Worked arithmetic, not a tested city
Illustration only: at 20% stress, 5 hours active and 10 hours off, the community default gives 20 + (5×4) − (10×2) = 20%. That calculation does not include discrete event changes, research, a scenario flaw, UI timing or any value not entered by the reader. If your panel differs, trust the panel and your run's modifiers.

Limits and evidence
The official 11 bit page establishes the original game and its survival-management premise. The numeric mechanics are from a community wiki, not an official patch note. Frostpunk 2's May 2025 district-heat announcement concerns the sequel and is not used as evidence for this guide. Steam discussions are player-authored leads only; no player post is treated as a verified result.

Before you play
- I read the current Generator stress value in this save.
- I checked for scenario, technology or event modifiers before using default rates.
- I will turn Overdrive off before relying on an estimate near the critical threshold.
- I will verify actual stress and building temperatures in-game.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include Frostpunk 2's heat changes?
No. It is explicitly for original Frostpunk (2018). Frostpunk 2's later district heat redesign is separate.
Are +4 and −2 guaranteed for every scenario?
No. They are community-reference defaults. Research, scenario flaws and events may change behavior; verify the current Generator panel and scenario text.
Does reaching 100% always immediately end every run?
This worksheet does not model the event or its choices. Read the event and scenario text in your own game; the calculator only flags its entered arithmetic reaching 100%.
Sources & revision notes
Editorial revision: November 7, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.
- 11 bit studios: Frostpunk (Official)
The publisher identifies the original Frostpunk as a society-survival game about managing citizens and infrastructure. This source identifies the game, not detailed heat or Overdrive values.
- Steam Store: Frostpunk (Official)
The product listing identifies 11 bit studios, the original Frostpunk, single-player scope and Steam features. It is not a mechanics manual; current price and review counts are intentionally not repeated.
- Steam News and Updates: Frostpunk (Official)
Official Steam update-history entry point checked November 7, 2026. This guide does not claim a specific installed patch number; consult the platform and in-game version display before applying advice.
- Frostpunk Wiki: Generator and Overdrive (Community)
Community-maintained mechanics reference checked November 7, 2026. It reports default Overdrive stress rising 4 percentage points per hour, falling 2 points per hour when Overdrive is off, heat increasing by one level, and scenario/technology modifiers. These are reference defaults, not a developer patch guarantee; read the installed game's Generator meter and scenario modifiers.
