Diagnose the building, not the city color
The original game's temperature overlay and source panels are the useful starting points for a cold-building problem. The community reference describes building temperature as affected by local heat zones, insulation, heaters and weather. Treat the in-game displayed band as the observation; this article does not reverse-engineer a universal temperature formula.
- Open the temperature overlay and identify one affected building. Note its displayed band and the current temperature/forecast.
- Select the building and identify which source should heat it: Generator zone, Steam Hub zone, or an enabled building heater.
- Open that source's panel. Verify it is running, has its required operating input, and covers the building according to the game's own UI; do not infer coverage from visual proximity alone.
- Check the building's insulation/research level and whether the temperature or weather changed since the last reading.
- Change one confirmed factor, then re-read the same building under comparable weather. If the display does not improve, undo the assumption and inspect the next listed factor.
| Observed issue | First check | Second check |
|---|---|---|
| Cold / Very Cold / Freezing building | Actual source zone and whether the source is on | Insulation and forecast before adding another source |
| Steam Hub area looks covered but building stays cold | Hub operating state and the in-game coverage/temperature display | Whether another heat source or building heater is needed |
| Building worsens during a storm | Forecast and the same building's band before/after weather change | Insulation and current source capacity, not a stale daytime reading |
| Can't identify affected building | Turn on the temperature overlay and select the building | Record scenario, day, research and exact displayed band |

Change one heat input at a time
Adding a Steam Hub, raising Generator settings and enabling multiple heaters at once can make it impossible to learn which constraint mattered and may raise coal demand. First record the displayed band and source state, then make one reversible adjustment where possible. The worksheet ranks checks; it cannot prove a particular change will solve a city's problem.

Keep the sequel's heat system separate
11 bit studios' May 2025 Patch 1.3 announcement for Frostpunk 2 says it replaced global heat demand with district-local heat levels and Heat Allocation. That is a sequel-specific redesign. This original-game diagnostic deliberately asks about the original Generator/Steam Hub/heater and does not ask readers to adjust Frostpunk 2 district allocations.

Before you play
- I selected one building and recorded its actual displayed temperature band.
- I identified the intended heat source and checked its in-game operating state.
- I considered insulation and weather/forecast before spending resources.
- I changed one factor and re-read the same building under comparable conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can the checker tell me whether the Generator or a Steam Hub is cheaper?
No. It routes observations and does not calculate a city-wide coal plan or account for every source setting and scenario modifier.
Is this the same system as Frostpunk 2?
No. Frostpunk 2's Patch 1.3 introduced district-local Heat Allocation. This guide covers the original Frostpunk heat-zone workflow.
Can I submit a question to GamerWin here?
Not yet; the linked Steam discussions are external user-generated player forums, not a GamerWin discussion board. Include game edition, scenario, platform/build, exact building band and source state, and omit personal or account details.
Sources & revision notes
Editorial revision: November 7, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.
- 11 bit studios: Frostpunk (Official)
The publisher identifies the original Frostpunk as a society-survival game about managing citizens and infrastructure. This source identifies the game, not detailed heat or Overdrive values.
- Steam Store: Frostpunk (Official)
The product listing identifies 11 bit studios, the original Frostpunk, single-player scope and Steam features. It is not a mechanics manual; current price and review counts are intentionally not repeated.

Official Steam update-history entry point checked November 7, 2026. This guide does not claim a specific installed patch number; consult the platform and in-game version display before applying advice.
- Frostpunk Wiki: Temperature (Community)
Community-maintained reference checked November 7, 2026 for the original Frostpunk's heat zones, temperature overlay, building insulation and sources. Use the game's own overlay and source panels to confirm a specific city; this page was not played or measured by GamerWin.

November 7, 2026: first publication. Added a source-bounded building-first diagnostic sequence that explicitly excludes Frostpunk 2's district redesign. No city or heat outcome was tested.
