First separate a hidden profile from a missing file
Bethesda's mod-save support note says using mods moves modded saves to a separate profile from non-modded saves. That means an empty-looking default profile is not proof the character file was erased.
- From the main menu, open Load and inspect the player-profile selector.
- Switch to the profile used by the modded playthrough, or choose the option to view all saves on the machine if available in your client.
- Compare character name, timestamp and mod marker before selecting a file; do not overwrite an existing save to test visibility.
- If no expected save appears in any profile, stop and check the platform's own save storage or Bethesda Support rather than deleting profiles or reserved data.

Treat the missing-content warning as a dependency check
Bethesda says 'This save relies on content that is no longer present' means a mod or DLC enabled when that save was made is no longer enabled. Its guidance is to re-enable the named mod/DLC. Loading without the dependency may cause objects to be unavailable; dismissing the warning does not restore the dependency.
- Read and record the content name in the warning; do not click Continue just to see what happens on your only copy.
- Check whether the named DLC is installed and enabled on the platform account that owns it.
- If the message names a mod, check the current Creations/load-order list and whether an update or removal changed its enabled state.
- Restore the required content first, then reopen the Load menu and confirm the warning no longer appears before resuming that save.
- If you cannot restore the exact dependency, preserve the save and seek Bethesda or the mod creator's platform-specific guidance before proceeding.

Check the PlayStation DLC edition boundary
Bethesda specifically warns that a PlayStation 5 upgraded version needs the PlayStation 5 version of its DLC. Having a similarly named PS4 DLC installed is not enough to infer that the PS5 game sees the required content. Bethesda also says it is investigating reports involving currently installed DLC on Microsoft Xbox App PC, so the warning's wording alone does not prove a universal cause.
| Platform/symptom | Check before loading | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 upgraded game | Confirm the matching PS5 DLC installation | Bethesda distinguishes the PS5 DLC build from PS4 DLC |
| PS4 game | Confirm the expected PS4 DLC and account entitlement | Do not assume an installed PS5 add-on is the right build for PS4 |
| Microsoft Xbox App on PC | Verify installed DLC and check current Bethesda patch notes/support | Bethesda identifies reports on this PC storefront; the warning can have different causes |
| Steam/Epic PC with mods | Check the dependency's enabled state and the active save profile | Do not copy another storefront's cleanup path without matching your install |

Protect the save before changing the load order
Changing or removing mods can affect saves that rely on them. The safe order is identification first, dependency restoration second, and a separate backup before any change. This guide intentionally avoids Bethesda's destructive reinstall/cleanup branches because they can remove content and are not a first-line fix for a save warning.
- Keep the original save file and do not delete it, clear the platform's saved data, or overwrite it with a test save.
- Write down the platform, store, game edition, displayed version, active profile and exact missing mod/DLC name.
- Back up the save using the platform's supported method before changing the load order; a backup should be verified as a separate copy, not assumed from a cloud icon.
- If advice conflicts, compare the date and platform of the advice with Bethesda's patch history and the exact PC storefront/console edition.
- Use Bethesda Support for a missing owned DLC entitlement; use the mod author for a mod package/update issue.

Before you play
- I checked the Load-menu profile used for the modded playthrough before assuming the save was deleted.
- I recorded the exact missing mod/DLC name in the warning.
- I verified the DLC edition matches the installed game, especially PS4 versus PS5.
- I restored dependencies before loading the save.
- I preserved an untouched copy and did not clear or delete actual save data.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Fallout 4 save disappear after installing mods?
Bethesda says modded saves use a separate profile from non-modded saves. Check the Load-menu profile selector or view all saves on the machine.
Can I safely continue when a save says content is missing?
Bethesda identifies the warning as a mod or DLC enabled when the save was made but no longer enabled. Re-enable the named content before loading; preserve the save if you cannot restore it.
Does PS4 DLC work with the PS5 upgraded game?
Bethesda's support page says the PS5 upgraded version requires the PS5 version of the DLC. Verify the matching edition before loading.

Bethesda states that modded saves use a separate profile and instructs players to switch profiles in the Load menu or view all saves on the machine. Short official troubleshooting text; it does not identify a particular local failure.
- Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 save relies on content that is no longer present (Official)
Bethesda says the warning means a mod or DLC enabled when the save was made is no longer enabled; its PlayStation note requires the correct PS4 versus PS5 DLC build. The article also identifies Microsoft Xbox App PC reports, so do not assume that every warning has the same cause.
