Research is item-category specific—and consumes the source item
Trait research teaches a trait for a particular equipment category; learning a trait on one category does not mean every weapon or armor slot has learned it. The official support steps direct you to a crafting station's Research tab, then the trait line and item category, where the game shows whether a matching item is available. Confirm the highlighted item before accepting: ESO Support explicitly warns that the chosen item is destroyed.
- Choose the item category and trait you want to unlock for a future craft or transmute.
- At the relevant Blacksmithing, Clothing, Woodworking, or Jewelry crafting station, open Research.
- Select the category and trait, then choose only an item whose displayed trait matches your goal.
- Read the confirmation window and verify the item you are willing to consume before starting research.

Treat each crafting type as its own queue
ESO Support says one trait per crafting type can be in research at a time and gives Woodworking, Jewelry Crafting, Blacksmithing, and Clothing as lines that can be active concurrently. That makes a useful planning rule: keep one next target for each line, and do not expect a second item on a currently occupied line to start immediately. The planner tracks these statuses manually; it does not synchronize with a character.
| Crafting type | Can it have a separate concurrent research? | Planner use |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Yes, as a distinct crafting type in the official support description | List one next armor/weapon category and trait |
| Clothing | Yes, as a distinct crafting type | List one next category and trait |
| Woodworking | Yes, as a distinct crafting type | List one next category and trait |
| Jewelry Crafting | The support article explicitly names it among simultaneously researchable types | List a separate jewelry trait goal |

Use the UI's Researchable state instead of guessing from inventory
The support article says an available trait is flagged Researchable and describes selecting the trait to see the exact eligible equipment. It also notes that the magnifying-glass indicator can identify an item with an available trait. These UI checks are safer than relying on a generic list, because the character's current learned traits and the item's category determine eligibility.
- Open the Research tab and locate the intended trait line.
- Look for Researchable on the category/trait and inspect the item choices the station presents.
- If no matching item is listed, verify that the item category and trait are actually the intended ones; do not deconstruct or vendor-sell gear just to test.
- Use the station's countdown to see the current completion time. The official timing article says repeated research for a specific weapon or armor type takes longer and relevant profession skill points can reduce time; this guide does not calculate a timer.

Worked example and safe stopping rule
Example: you want a Sharpened trait for a sword, and your Blacksmithing line already has research in progress. The supported path is to find a sword with Sharpened, verify the relevant sword category and Researchable state, then record it as the next Blacksmithing target—not to sacrifice a different trait or assume it will start in parallel on that same type. If you also have a valid Clothing target, that can be scheduled separately, subject to its own current line status.
| Observed state | Next safe move | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Desired trait and matching category both show Researchable; line is free | Review the item-destruction confirmation, then start if it is the intended item | That this page checked the item for you |
| Line already shows a countdown | Keep the next target in your local queue and use another free crafting type if ready | That the second same-line research can run simultaneously |
| Trait exists but no eligible item is listed | Check the exact category and the trait on the candidate item | That any item with the same broad name/category is valid |
| Research appears unusually slow | Inspect the live countdown and relevant profession skill text; compare the official timing article | That a fixed ETA applies regardless of prior research or skills |

Before you play
- I selected a specific crafting type, item category, and trait.
- The station currently marks the intended trait/item Researchable.
- I checked whether this crafting type already has research in progress.
- I am willing to destroy the exact item shown in the confirmation.
- I will use the live station countdown rather than a generic duration estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I research a trait while another trait is already researching?
The official support page says only one trait per crafting type can be researched at a time, while different crafting types can research at the same time.
Does the planner know which traits my character has learned?
No. It stores only the targets and checkboxes you enter in this browser page; verify Researchable in the station UI.
Will this planner tell me when research completes?
No. Research duration varies and the live crafting station shows the countdown. This tool deliberately does not estimate it.

- ESO Support: How do I research a trait? (Official)
Official support steps for Research, the Researchable marker, matching an item category and trait, and the fact that the selected item is destroyed. It says only one trait per crafting type can be researched at a time, while different crafting types can research concurrently. It does not promise a fixed duration.
- ESO Support: Why is it taking so long for me to research things? (Official)
Official support explains that research time increases each time a specific weapon or armor type is researched and that profession skill points can reduce time. Its duration ranges are not repeated here because this guide is a workflow, not a live timer estimate; verify the countdown and current skill text in game.
