Find the bottleneck with a same-resource check
Dome Keeper alternates defense with digging and resource use. Steam's official description establishes that loop; the community wiki describes transport options such as Lift and Droneyard. Those references help identify what to inspect, but they are not a universal winning build: modes, keeper, upgrades and DLC change the choices available.
A fair comparison requires a consistent unit and checkpoint. Do not mix iron with water, or count resources you spent on upgrades as if they were carried home. The planner is intentionally a bookkeeping tool, not a simulator for gadget speed, mine layout, pathfinding or wave duration.
- Choose one resource you need for the next upgrade. Record the amount already at the dome immediately before one mining trip.
- At a comparable checkpoint after the trip, record how much of that same resource you personally observed being returned. If you cannot separate mined from delivered units, leave that run out rather than guessing.
- Enter dome stock, the amount mined during the interval, and the amount actually returned. The remaining amount is an observed backlog estimate, not necessarily a pile at one location.
- If little was mined, inspect drill strength, rock hardness, route choice and keeper-specific mining actions. If plenty was mined but little returned, inspect carry limits, the return path and the transport gadget you actually have.
- Repeat over another comparable interval before spending scarce resources. Change one factor and compare the same resource; an unusually short wave, detour or upgrade purchase can distort a single sample.
| Observation | Next question | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Little ore mined and little returned | Was drilling or route access the slow step? | That transport is necessarily the problem |
| Many units mined but few returned | Did the keeper carry them, or does the chosen gadget move them? | One gadget is best in every map/mode |
| Stock rises but upgrade remains unaffordable | Did you spend the resource between checkpoints? | The tool knows your inventory |
| Two runs disagree | Did mode, keeper, map, upgrades or wave timing change? | That one sample proves gadget balance |

Choose one adjustment, then keep the comparison honest
A mining upgrade helps only if extraction is the observed bottleneck; carrying or automation helps only if the return leg is what holds the resource back. Check the current upgrade panel and preserve enough resources for the next defensive need. Do not copy an old cost list: the game's Steam update history continues to change gadgets, keepers and balance.
- Write the bottleneck you observed in one sentence: 'mining is slow', 'return trip is slow', or 'I cannot distinguish the two.'
- Choose one current, available upgrade or route adjustment that directly addresses that observation; record its displayed cost before confirming it.
- Repeat the same-resource check after a comparable wave/trip. Keep the mode, keeper, gadget and measurement boundaries in the note.
- If the result is still unclear, use the second guide's player-report template to ask a version-matched question rather than posting a generic 'best build?' request.
Before you play
- I compared one resource at matching checkpoints.
- I separated mined units from units that actually returned.
- I noted mode, keeper, gadgets and upgrades before comparing runs.
- I checked the current UI instead of importing a fixed old cost table.
- I treated the local output as arithmetic, not telemetry or a recommended build.
Frequently asked questions
Does the planner know the mine's remaining resources?
No. It only computes the totals from the counts you enter; it cannot read a save, screen or map.
Does Dome Keeper have one best transport gadget?
This guide does not rank them universally. Compare options shown in your current mode and keeper setup against the bottleneck you observed.
Is this a tested v5.0.8 route?
No. v5.0.8 is the newest Steam patch listed on the checked date; the advice is source-based and no run was played.
