Start from the trip you are preparing for

A food plot is useful only if it can replace what you consume. The community Wiki describes gardening as seed, compatible ground, hoe, water, growth and manual harvest. It also notes that seed return is not guaranteed at the start; a small garden can shrink if you cook or eat every crop and do not collect replacement seeds.

The Basic Workbench's cited recipes include a Wooden Hoe, Watering Can and Cooking Pot. The watering can and pot require copper bars according to the consulted crafting table. Check your in-game station if a recipe looks different. Begin with a few seeds you already have and a patch you can revisit; an elaborate farm is not required for the first expedition.

  1. Inspect each seed's compatible ground; do not assume a crop from another biome grows on the dirt beside the Core.
  2. Hoe a small patch, plant the seed and water it. If growth stalls, check the ground type and whether the planted tile was watered.
  3. Return when crops are fully grown, harvest, and separate seeds for replanting from ingredients for meals.
  4. Place a Cooking Pot, add one suitable ingredient to each slot, and inspect the finished dish's displayed effect.
  5. Take a few meals for the next trip; keep a portion of the harvest or extra gathered seed to restart the loop.

Diagnose the loop at the stage that stopped

Do not blame cooking when there is no ingredient supply. First verify that a crop was planted on suitable ground and watered. Only then check harvesting and the pot. The Wiki lists some crops with special ground, so replacing the seed at random may hide the actual issue.

Two ingredients produce a dish; the cooking page says ingredient order is immaterial. The output may have effects that differ from eating either ingredient raw. Do not infer that two copies of the same temporary bonus necessarily add together; inspect the finished dish.

Worked example: choose by the bottleneck, not rarity

Illustrative planning case: you have a short supply of seeds and are about to explore an unfamiliar tunnel. Cooking all harvested ingredients might provide a few immediate meals but leave no practical replanting loop. Reserve your next viable seeds, cook only the surplus in pairs, then inspect whether the finished dishes support the problem you expect—sustained food, a recovery benefit or another displayed effect.

A rare-looking ingredient is not automatically the best use of a scarce crop. The cooking page describes hidden ingredient interactions and higher-rarity dishes, but this guide deliberately does not promise a fixed recipe outcome without the exact ingredient pair and installed build.

Carry a small farm record

If your loop still fails, record seed, planted ground, watering, harvest, seed returned and the pair used in the Cooking Pot. This separates a soil problem, seed shortage and cooking misunderstanding in one return trip.

  • Seed is planted on compatible ground and watered.
  • A few seeds are reserved or replacement seeds are sought.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my seed not grow next to the Core?

Some seeds need a specific ground type. Check the seed and planted tile first, then verify it has been watered.

Do I always get a new seed when harvesting?

The consulted Gardening page says early seed return is not guaranteed. Keep replacement seeds in mind before using the whole harvest for meals.

Does ingredient order matter in the Cooking Pot?

The community cooking reference says no; what matters is the ingredient pair. Inspect the finished dish in your installed game.
