Civilization VI · first-city preflight

Review a candidate city site

Use your Settler lens and nearby tile previews. This is a prompt list, not a map score: it cannot inspect the seed, civilization, terrain or threat.

Enter counts from the visible candidate ring

  • Enter whole numbers before comparing. Use the Settler lens and map tiles you can actually inspect; this check cannot read a map or account for civilization abilities.

No map data is uploaded or retained. Counts and flags are your own observations; reopen the in-game Settler lens before moving the Settler.

Compare sites before moving the Settler

Civilopedia describes the Settler lens as showing recommended city sites and water availability. The official manual explains that rivers run along tile edges, improve surrounding farmland and can provide fresh water; it also describes Grassland as generally food-rich, Plains as trading some growth for more production, and Hills as adding production and defensive value while being harder to work. These are comparison clues, not a promise that any one terrain type is always best.

  1. Open the Settler lens and compare at least two visible candidates before committing.
  2. Check water availability in the lens, then inspect whether a river, lake or other supported source is relevant to the tile.
  3. Look at the actual tile yields around each candidate; distinguish visible land from tiles already controlled or workable by another city.
  4. Balance Food for growth against Production for early construction, while noting resources and features you do not want to cover.
  5. Check unit access, nearby threats and whether a needed tile is outside your current border.
  6. Use the local preflight below to capture the trade-offs, then return to the game and verify the candidate.

Use a compact decision table

For a first city, compare the opportunity cost rather than chasing one perfect yield. Civilization-specific abilities, map scripts, difficulty and expansion systems can change what a promising location means.

If the candidate has…Why it may helpWhat to verify before settling
Fresh waterThe manual notes fresh water can support city growthCheck the Settler lens and actual water source; do not assume access from a nearby-looking river
More visible FoodCan support population growthCheck total workable tiles, borders and competing city claims
More visible Production or HillsCan support early construction and defensive terrainCheck whether enough Food remains and whether hills/terrain are usable
A strategic or luxury resourceMay matter for the empire's planCheck whether settling covers it and when it becomes available
A narrow approach or nearby hostile unitMay affect defense and accessCheck movement routes, unit cover and nearby threat rather than assuming safety
High-value district/wonder terrainCan shape later city layoutKeep candidate districts and wonder restrictions in mind; verify their placement lens later

Do not mistake a visible river for a complete site score

The manual notes that rivers flow between hexes rather than through their interiors. It also describes some terrain and features as affecting movement, defense and production. A screenshot or hand-count cannot substitute for the current Settler-lens information, current tile ownership and your civilization's specific rules. The checker summarizes what you entered; it does not score or recommend a seed.

Use the player forum only for comparable openings

If you want another player's opinion on a start, share the game build, platform, ruleset, leader, map type and seed, plus a screenshot that hides account details. Compare replies from the same configuration. Steam Discussions are player-authored; GamerWin does not verify those reports or claim a hands-on opening test.

Before you play

  • I compared more than one candidate in the Settler lens.
  • I distinguished visible tile yield from ownership and workable access.
  • I weighed Food, Production, water, resources, defense and future district space.
  • I recorded leader, ruleset, map type and seed before comparing advice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always settle directly on a river?

No universal rule. Fresh-water access is an important signal, but compare the game's water preview with food, production, resources, defense and civilization bonuses.

Does the first-city checker read the map or predict a winning start?

No. It displays prompts from the values you enter. It cannot read a seed, inspect the map or predict an outcome.

Can I copy advice from an online start screenshot?

Only if the build, map, seed, leader, ruleset and platform context match; otherwise treat it as a separate example, not a guaranteed route.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 6, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Civilization VI 25th Anniversary English PC Manual — Districts and Buildings (Official)

Publisher-supplied game manual hosted in the Steam app's official manual directory. The district section names standard adjacency relationships and says the placement lens previews available yields and blocked tiles. It is an older general manual, not a complete current DLC, leader, balance-patch or mod database.

  2. Civilopedia: Lenses — District Placement and Settler lenses (Official)

Civilopedia page documents the District Placement lens for valid tiles and adjacency information, and the Settler lens for recommended city sites and water availability. Recheck the actual interface for the current ruleset and save.
