Civilization VI · local comparison

Compare two district tiles

Copy the relevant adjacency/yield preview you see for each tile in-game. The tool only compares your entries—it does not calculate hex adjacency, inspect the map, or decide legality.

Enter both in-game preview values

Use the District Placement lens or the current in-game tooltip for both tiles. This comparison does not generate or estimate map adjacency.

Before placing: verify tile legality in the lens and compare growth, access, resources, ownership cost, wonders, future districts and your chosen ruleset.

All entries stay in this browser page and reset on reload. The game's own placement preview is authoritative for your current civilization, ruleset, DLC and map.

Start from the game's own placement lens

The official manual says choosing a district from the production menu opens the placement lens. It describes that lens as an overview of yield outcomes on surrounding tiles and says it marks unavailable locations; if a useful candidate is outside your borders, the lens can offer tile purchase. The current screen is more reliable than a static diagram because it reflects the active game state.

  1. Select the district in the city's Production Menu so the District Placement lens opens.
  2. Discard any tile the interface marks unavailable. Check the reason shown by the game before concluding a rule is inconsistent.
  3. For each remaining candidate, note the exact yield/adjacency preview shown in your current ruleset.
  4. Compare the primary yield you actually need, then check tile ownership, terrain, resources, wonders and space for future districts.
  5. Use the local comparison below only to remember and compare two values copied from your screen; confirm the final tile in-game before placing.

Use adjacency references as a shortlist, not a substitute for the preview

The manual gives a compact set of base relationships: Campus benefits from Mountains and Rainforest; Holy Site from Natural Wonders, Mountains and Woods; Commercial Hub from a River or Harbor and nearby districts; Theater Square from Wonders, Rainforest and other districts; Harbor from sea resources and other districts; and Industrial Zone from Mines, Quarries and other districts. It labels these relationships major, standard or minor but does not provide a complete contemporary table for every DLC and unique district.

Remember the manual's hard placement examples

The same manual calls out several constraints that are useful when debugging a red or missing tile: an Encampment cannot be adjacent to the City Center or another Encampment; an Aqueduct uses one hex between a city center and a qualifying water source, and that source cannot also touch the city center; Aerodromes and Spaceports cannot be placed on Hills. Later content and unique rules may introduce additional cases, so treat these as examples rather than an exhaustive legality engine.

Compare two candidates and keep a reproducible note

Write down the city, district, ruleset, active DLC/mods, game build and the two preview values before placing anything. If you are comparing a later map change, the note makes it clear whether the candidate tiles, policy effects or installed rules changed. A higher typed value is not automatically the better strategic tile if it costs a valuable resource, blocks a wonder, breaks a future district plan or is not legal.

  1. Record the ruleset and relevant expansion/mod state.
  2. Enter the same type of in-game preview value for Candidate A and Candidate B.
  3. Choose the yield you are prioritizing and compare the result.
  4. Resolve ties by checking future adjacency, tile ownership, strategic resources, wonder placement and the city's intended role.
  5. Place only after the game itself still marks the chosen tile available.

Before you play

  • I opened the selected district's own placement lens.
  • I excluded tiles marked unavailable and recorded why.
  • Both candidate values came from the same city, ruleset and current interface.
  • I checked future city layout and tile ownership, not only the entered yield.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool calculate adjacency from a map?

No. It compares two values you enter from the in-game preview. It cannot see hexes, apply leader abilities or determine legality.

Can I use a base-game district table for every expansion?

Use it as a shortlist only. Expansion and unique district effects can change placement and yields; verify the active save's lens.

Does a higher preview always mean I should build there?

No. Access, ownership, resources, wonder space, district planning and city role can outweigh one immediate yield.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 6, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Civilization VI 25th Anniversary English PC Manual — Districts and Buildings (Official)

Publisher-supplied game manual hosted in the Steam app's official manual directory. The district section names standard adjacency relationships and says the placement lens previews available yields and blocked tiles. It is an older general manual, not a complete current DLC, leader, balance-patch or mod database.

  2. Civilopedia: Lenses — District Placement and Settler lenses (Official)

Civilopedia page documents the District Placement lens for valid tiles and adjacency information, and the Settler lens for recommended city sites and water availability. Recheck the actual interface for the current ruleset and save.
