Interpret the visible state before choosing
The official support article describes sync-status icons beside Vault Hunters at Character Select and gives the last sync time in the pause menu. Use those clues together with version and character progression; do not decide only from which device you are currently using.
| Visible state / situation | What official support says | Conservative next action |
|---|---|---|
| No sync icon | No save attached to the SHiFT account | Do not assume cross-save is active; verify the account and upload/download menu first. |
| Save conflict | Local and cloud copies are out of sync | Open conflict details and compare version/progress before selecting either copy. |
| Cloud is newer game version | Playing local can create a later conflict | Prefer updating the game before loading this Vault Hunter, as support recommends. |
| Local is further ahead | Using cloud can override local progress | Do not pick cloud unless you intend to replace the local state. |
| Cancel conflict prompt | Continue locally; no next sync attempt for that character until you decide | This can preserve current local play for now, but is not a permanent resolution or backup. |

Safe conflict checklist
- Stop before selecting Upload or Download. If you are unsure which copy is newer, do not choose based on timestamp alone.
- Record platform, installed game version, Vault Hunter name, the Character Select sync icon and the local/cloud progress details shown in the conflict view.
- Update both platform clients to a compatible current build before retrying where practical; a save made on a newer version may not load in an older client.
- If the local version is clearly the copy you intend to keep, follow the current in-game prompt and verify the character loads and its expected progress appears before moving to another device.
- If the conflict details are ambiguous, use Cancel if offered to continue locally without selecting the cloud copy, then contact official support with the exact state. Keep platform-native backups separate if available.
- Do not treat SHiFT cross-save as restoration: Gearbox says it cannot restore a vanished/deleted Vault Hunter from account history.

Use the decision checker without exposing account data
This browser-local tool takes only your own description of the conflict and platform situation. It does not read the local save folder, query SHiFT, compare timestamps, upload, download, back up, or restore a character.

When a character is actually missing
A missing character is different from a visible conflict. Gearbox states SHiFT history cannot restore a Vault Hunter absent from the platform saves. Follow the official instructions for the source platform and its cloud-save system; do not download an unknown save utility or post a character file to a forum.

Before you play
- I stopped before choosing Upload or Download.
- I recorded the platform, build, sync indicator and displayed local/cloud progress.
- I updated versions where practical and did not load a newer save on an older build.
- I kept a visible conflict separate from a truly missing character.
- I understand cross-save is not a backup or character-restoration service.
Frequently asked questions
Will Cancel permanently fix the conflict?
No. Gearbox says Cancel continues with the local save and skips another sync attempt for that character until you make a choice; the prompt may return.
Can I use SHiFT to restore a deleted Vault Hunter?
No. Gearbox says cross-save is not a lost-save restore service and SHiFT history cannot restore a character absent from platform saves.
What if the cloud save is newer than my installed game?
Gearbox recommends updating before playing that save; loading or uploading across version mismatch can create conflicts or make the save unplayable on an older version.
Does this tool compare my two copies?
No. It displays a reminder based on your selected answers; it cannot see either save or account.
