Start with the ship's readings, not a universal reactor recipe
Barotrauma's publisher-hosted wiki describes two linked parts of reactor behavior: fission produces heat and turbine output converts heat into electricity. Increasing turbine output asks for more heat; if demand exceeds heat supplied, the reactor may stall and stop producing power. Fuel condition and the number/type of rods also affect heat. The same wiki explicitly flags the reactor data as potentially outdated, so treat these as relationships to investigate, not a current numeric setting chart.
The Status Monitor page describes General Status and Electrical View as separate views. Use the labels and readings present on your current submarine; custom subs, wiring, skill bonuses, batteries and mods can make a copied baseline misleading. If you cannot find a reliable output/load value, do not guess: use the checklist and compare device behavior instead.
- Open the submarine's Electrical View and note the currently visible output, consumption/load and any device whose power or condition is abnormal. Record the sub name, platform, mode and displayed build.
- Enter only comparable values from the same observation in the local power-margin check. A nonnegative arithmetic margin means only that the values you entered do not show a shortfall; it is not proof that the reactor is stable or that every device is wired correctly.
- If the margin is negative or unavailable, inspect load spikes and recently activated systems, then check junction boxes, reactor fuel condition and the reactor's current heat/output behavior. Avoid moving both fission and turbine controls at once; make one small, reversible change only if you understand the ship's setup.
- If the reactor stalls, overheats, or power repeatedly oscillates, return controls to a known safe state for your sub and ask an experienced crew member to inspect its wiring. A stock-sub preset may not apply to a custom or modded design.
- After any adjustment, observe the same readings under the same operating conditions, then recheck oxygen generation, engines, pumps and weapons. Do not test changes during a live emergency if the crew lacks a recovery plan.
| Observation | First check | Do not conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Entered load exceeds available output | Reduce/sequence optional loads and inspect output behavior | That a fixed dial percentage will fix all subs |
| Margin is positive but devices fail | Device power path, junction-box condition, wiring and local faults | That reactor output guarantees the device is powered |
| Output drops or oscillates | Reactor stability, fuel condition and changing load | That more turbine output is always better |
| Values are missing or incomparable | Use status indicators and record a controlled observation | A guessed value or a community sub preset is authoritative |

Keep the diagnostic version-matched
Steam's announcement index currently lists v1.13.5.0 on October 27, 2026, while the reactor wiki's detail page has older update markers. This guide intentionally avoids quoting old control ranges, power values or optimal settings as if they were checked against the latest build. The announced Home & Harbor DLC release date is December 2, 2026, after this review date; no post-release behavior is claimed.
When a community post suggests a precise wiring diagram, reactor setting or fuel choice, compare its game version, submarine, difficulty, class skill, mods and current load with your own. Ask for the exact sub and symptoms, not just 'best reactor settings.'
| Before using advice | Record |
|---|---|
| Version context | Displayed game version and whether the Steam branch is stable or beta |
| Sub context | Stock/custom name, relevant reactor/junction wiring and installed mods |
| Operating context | Current load, recently enabled systems and whether power drops under movement/combat |
| Evidence | A current in-game reading or a version-matched official announcement |
Before you play
- I copied readings from my own sub rather than a screenshot from another vessel.
- I kept output and load values from the same time/state.
- I checked wiring, fuel condition and changing loads before adjusting controls.
- I treated a positive arithmetic margin as a clue, not proof of a stable reactor.
- I matched any external advice to version, sub, mode and mods.
Frequently asked questions
What fission and turbine percentages should I use?
There is no universal value established here. Reactor output depends on the rod, heat, load, wiring, skill and submarine. The publisher-hosted wiki also flags some reactor data as potentially outdated.
Does the planner read reactor telemetry?
No. It compares only the output and load values you enter in this browser tab. It cannot inspect or control the game.
Is this a tested 1.13.5.0 build?
No. The version is taken from the official announcement index. The guide is source-based and no live reactor or submarine was tested.
