Begin at the last known refill point

The community Oxygen page says an Oxygenator in a starting Shelter or connected platform supplies a tether chain. A tether line can go black when oxygen is unavailable. The key distinction is source versus carrier: additional tethers cannot repair a missing Oxygenator or a disconnected platform cable.

The wiki describes the Planetfall mission's starting Oxygenator being claimed through the Landing Pad Mission Log. Check your own mission state if the base never supplied oxygen, rather than assuming every new save spawned an installed Oxygenator.

  1. Return immediately toward a known Shelter or platform when the line goes black; watch the backpack oxygen bar rather than the number of placed tethers.
  2. At the base, confirm the Oxygenator is actually installed or attached and supplying a nearby player.
  3. Follow connected platforms and cables to the first tether. Reconnect any detached platform before rebuilding the distant end.
  4. Walk the tether chain outward one link at a time. At the first dark segment, move or replace that segment so it connects to a lit predecessor.
  5. At the new endpoint, wait for the backpack oxygen bar to refill before continuing into a cave.

Do not confuse oxygen with base power

The Oxygen and Platform references distinguish oxygen distribution from ordinary machine power. A tether supplies the player with oxygen and can feed the player's backpack in a limited way, but it is not a general power cable for a furnace or printer. Fix the machine network separately if the problem is a stopped module.

A vehicle may supply nearby oxygen without having the Oxygenator needed to extend a tether route away from it. Check the specific source before expecting a long chain to stay lit.

Worked example: fixing the source before the tunnel

Illustrative diagnosis, not an observed save: a player places several tethers into a cave, but even the first one near a newly moved platform is dark. Moving the farthest tether does not help. They return to the platform, reconnect its cable to the Oxygenator-bearing base, and then inspect the first tether's light and their backpack refill before re-entering.

If the platform was already connected, the next controlled test is the first tether spacing. The point is to identify the first dark link, not to promise that every black line has the same cause.

Keep a correction record

Record platform, installed build, source type, first dark link, cable state and backpack oxygen after one change. A photo of both the base and the first failing segment helps distinguish a source failure from a gap in the chain.

For an idle printer or furnace, switch to the related power-network guide. It checks generation, flow and output storage rather than oxygen.

Before you play

  • Return to a known refill point before diagnosing.
  • Oxygenator and platform cable verified.
  • First dark tether link found, not guessed.
  • Backpack refilling at the new endpoint.

Frequently asked questions

Do tethers create oxygen on their own?

No. They extend an Oxygenator-bearing source through a connected chain, according to the cited community Wiki.

Can a tether power my Smelting Furnace?

Not as a general machine network. Use connected platform power cables and check the gauge; tether power is limited to the player's backpack.
