1. Check which crew slot you are actually training
War Thunder trains the crew slot, not an invisible permanent rating attached to one tank. The skill points in a slot can benefit vehicles assigned to that slot, while Expert and Ace qualification are vehicle-specific. That distinction matters when you move a lineup around or train the same slot on another vehicle.
2. Match a recurring pain point to a skill effect
| If you repeatedly notice… | Check this ground skill | Boundary to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Manual reload is the bottleneck | Weapon Reloading for the relevant loader role | The Wiki says it does not speed an autoloader’s mechanical cycle. |
| Turret/gun aiming feels slow or imprecise | Gunner Targeting | It affects gun traverse/elevation; vehicle mechanics and damage can still constrain aim. |
| Tracks or modules take too long to repair | Field Repair across the crew | Its effect uses the crew average; spending only on one person is not the same as raising the average. |
| A fallen crewmember is replaced slowly | Agility across the crew | The Wiki describes an average crew value, so spread points rather than maxing one role. |
| A crew member is frequently incapacitated | Vitality for relevant crew members | This is not the same as the averaged skills above; inspect the current skill tooltip. |
| I use the rangefinder often | Gunner Rangefinding | Useful only for that action; it does not replace learning your gun’s ballistics. |
| I want a broad bonus on a main vehicle | Commander Leadership and vehicle qualification cost | The Wiki describes Leadership as expensive; compare the actual current SL price first. |
3. Spend in small, reversible planning steps
- Open the exact crew slot currently assigned to the ground vehicle you are evaluating.
- Use the vehicle’s crew panel/X-ray or Crew Skills view to identify its actual roles, including whether it has a human loader or an autoloader.
- Name one repeated problem from recent matches—reload cycle, aiming, repair, replacement, or survivability—before choosing a skill.
- Read that skill’s current tooltip and compare its next-step cost with the crew’s unspent XP. Do not copy a universal tier list without checking the vehicle and mode.
- Apply a modest allocation, then observe the same kind of situation over several matches. If the bottleneck was actually positioning, damage, or vehicle design, stop spending into a skill that does not address it.
4. Decide when vehicle qualification is worth the Silver Lions
| Your plan for the slot | More useful comparison | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You rotate several vehicles through this slot | Value of shared skills vs. one vehicle’s Expert cost | Basic skill points are slot-bound; higher qualification is vehicle-specific. |
| This is a regular vehicle in your lineup | Current Expert cost vs. its expected use | Qualification adds to the chosen vehicle, not every vehicle you assign to the crew. |
| You may change mode or lineup soon | Wait until role and vehicle are settled | Role needs and qualifications may not transfer as you expect. |
| You are short on SL | Keep building the skill plan and revisit qualification later | Do not confuse Crew XP upgrades with the vehicle-specific paid qualification step. |
5. Avoid these common allocation traps
Do not apply aircraft advice to tank crews: the skills and qualification distribution differ. Do not assume every vehicle has the same crew roles. Do not put all average-based Field Repair or Agility into one position, and do not spend into Weapon Reloading expecting it to accelerate an autoloader. Community recommendations can be useful starting points, but they may reflect a different vehicle lineup, game mode, or older UI.

Frequently asked questions
Does this guide prove a vehicle or shell will work in a live match?
No. Vehicle, shell, range, angle, server behavior and patch can affect outcomes; use the current in-game analysis for the stated case.
