Vintage Story prospecting check

Choose the closest prospecting symptom and, for a missing Node Mode, the radius setting you have confirmed in this world.

Finish one valid density reading before comparing locations
  1. Select Density Mode from the prospecting pick's F menu and break three sample blocks for one reading.
  2. Keep each of the three blocks at least three blocks apart; too-close samples can leave the reading incomplete.
  3. Record the first block's X/Z position as the reading location. Y/elevation does not change the density result for that X/Z column.
  4. No ore or stone drops from these sample blocks, so do not use the broken-block drops as evidence.

Limit: A reading describes ore-generation opportunity in a vertical column, not confirmed ore below the sample or deposit size.

Only these selections choose the displayed checklist. Nothing is uploaded or stored; selections reset on reload. The tool cannot read a save or inspect a world.

Separate a missing mode from a missed node

Density Mode and Node Mode answer different questions. The community Prospecting guide describes Density Mode as a broad generation-opportunity survey and Node Mode as the closer search used while digging. Its F-menu may show one or both options depending on the world setting.

The community World Configuration page says `propickNodeSearchRadius` enables Node Mode when set above zero. It lists 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 as Customize choices and notes that the Standard preset/default behavior can differ from an unset configuration. Do not infer a missing ore from a menu option that the world has disabled.

If the mode is missing

The configuration reference labels the relevant survival-challenge details as last verified for version 1.21.6. Treat that as the source's version boundary, not a claim about the latest installed build. In multiplayer, a player without world-owner or administrator access should ask the host; changing a world configuration can affect everyone.

  1. Record the installed game version, single-player/multiplayer mode and the option you see in the prospecting pick's F menu.
  2. Check the world creation Customize settings or ask its owner to inspect `propickNodeSearchRadius`. The reference says a value above zero enables Node Mode; its listed Customize values include 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8.
  3. If you have permission and are using the documented command interface, the reference shows `/worldconfig propickNodeSearchRadius` to display the setting. Do not run a setter command on a shared world just to test the guide.
  4. Compare the actual displayed setting with the installed build and Handbook. If it is positive but the mode remains absent, record the exact build and report the mismatch rather than guessing at a fix.

If Node Mode is present but reports no ore

A no-node result is about the sampled location and the configured search radius; it is not a verdict on an entire region. Before changing your plan, verify the target ore and use the Handbook's host-rock/depth notes. The linked community prospecting guide says Node Mode is the closer search, while Density Mode helps decide where to dig.

  1. Open the F menu and confirm the intended mode and target ore; record the exact wording of the result.
  2. Check the current radius with the world owner/settings if it is unknown. Do not compare two worlds as if their search ranges must match.
  3. Use a completed Density Mode reading to select a different candidate area, or test a depth/host-rock combination supported by the Handbook.
  4. When a trace does appear, compare nearby samples while recording the selected ore, coordinates and elevation. Change one position at a time so the displayed direction is meaningful.
  5. If the display still conflicts with the reference on a confirmed build, submit the observed setting and exact message to the official forum; hide account names and private server details.

Version and authority boundary

The configuration reference says the listed survival-challenge section was last verified for 1.21.6. This guide is not a live detector, does not run `/worldconfig`, and cannot read a player's save or inspect a server. The publisher's official site links the wiki and forums, but the wiki's mechanics articles are community-edited. Prefer your installed Handbook, visible settings and host confirmation when they conflict.

Before you play

  • I recorded the installed build and whether this is my world or a hosted multiplayer world.
  • I checked `propickNodeSearchRadius` before treating an absent mode as a tool fault.
  • I kept Density Mode's broad survey separate from Node Mode's close search.
  • I treated a no-trace message as local evidence and did not assume it rules out a region.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Vintage Story world enable Node Mode?

The linked configuration reference says the second mode is enabled by a positive `propickNodeSearchRadius`; the available presets/defaults can differ. Check the actual world.

Should I change the radius in multiplayer?

Only with the world owner's permission. This guide recommends confirming settings, not changing a shared server as a troubleshooting experiment.

Does a Node Mode trace reveal the full ore deposit?

No. It is a local search clue. Continue comparing samples and use the installed Handbook; the checker does not map or measure a vein.

Editorial revision: November 5, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Vintage Story Wiki: World Configuration (Community)

Community-edited configuration reference linked from the publisher's official wiki. The survival-challenges section states it was last verified for Vintage Story 1.21.6 and describes propickNodeSearchRadius. Use the installed build and actual world settings if they differ. No commands were run and no server configuration was changed.

  2. Vintage Story Wiki: Guide to Prospecting (Community)

Community-edited game wiki linked directly from Vintage Story's official homepage. The guide distinguishes Density Mode from Node Mode, documents the three-block density sample, warns that density is opportunity rather than confirmed ore, and presents one contributor's search spacing as an example rather than a mandatory route. Checked November 5, 2026; no world or mine was tested.
