Choose the campaign's version before loading the save
Paradox's 1.15 release notice explicitly warns that old saves will not be compatible because the update changes the map and mechanics. It recommends backing up if the player wants to continue by backpatching. A failed load is not evidence the save is corrupt; first verify the game branch matches the save's origin.
The release announcement names 1.13 or 1.14 as the previous versions and says the 1.14 open-beta save is included. Treat this as a version-specific release instruction, not a promise that every later patch will preserve the same branches.
| Goal | Safer choice | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Continue pre-1.15 run | Back up, select the matching earlier branch, load the copy | Opening the only copy in 1.15 |
| Start new current run | Use 1.15 and keep the old save archived | Expecting old save to migrate |
| Switch branches later | Restore the backup and match its original build | Saving over the archive from a different build |

Branch-and-backup sequence
Use the exact storefront's version-management interface; Steam beta branch access is not interchangeable with Paradox launcher or other PC storefront instructions.
- Exit the game and copy the campaign file to a separate dated folder; keep the original untouched.
- Record the current game version/checksum and whether the save came from stable 1.14 or the 1.14 open beta.
- In the same storefront, select the appropriate earlier version branch named by Paradox; if the branch is unavailable, stop and consult current official support rather than downloading an unofficial executable.
- Launch the matching build and load only the backup copy. If it loads, continue that campaign on that branch.
- For 1.15, start a separate campaign and avoid overwriting or transferring the old campaign file between branches.

Scope and player discussion
The linked Reddit thread is user-generated discussion around the update; it can help identify common questions but does not override Paradox's stated incompatibility. This checklist neither repairs a save nor inspects local files.

Before you play
- I kept an untouched copy of the old save.
- I recorded its original branch/version.
- I selected the matching official storefront branch before loading.
- I keep 1.15 campaigns separate from older campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
Can I load my 1.14 save in 1.15?
Paradox warns the old save is incompatible; back up and use the matching earlier branch to continue it.
Which rollback versions does the 1.15 notice name?
The notice names 1.13 or 1.14 and explicitly includes saves from the 1.14 open beta.
Will this checklist restore a broken save?
No. It prevents risky cross-version handling; it cannot inspect or repair your save.
