Start with the building's actual status

The community Wiki describes a 'Nothing to do in range' status for field workplaces when no crop task is available nearby. That does not prove the building is broken. Inspect its range overlay and the plot markings; a crop can be visible on the map but still outside the selected farmhouse's reach.

Check staffing and work priorities next. Folktails and Iron Teeth use different farmhouse variants, so copying the wrong building name or crop list can create a false diagnosis. Use the selected building's UI as the reference for your faction.

  1. Select the idle farmhouse. Read its status, worker slots and highlighted range.
  2. Inspect one problematic tile: is it marked for a crop that this faction's farmhouse can handle and actually inside the range?
  3. Check whether that tile is irrigated and the crop has reached maturity; a growing crop is not ready to harvest.
  4. Read the farmhouse's planting/harvesting mode and crop priority. Switch only if the current mode is starving the task you need.
  5. After one change, let the worker complete a task and watch food or ingredient storage. If harvest output does not move, inspect storage and hauling.

Match the symptom to the first failed gate

A planting-priority farmhouse can keep replanting nearby harvested tiles while mature crops farther away wait. The Wiki describes mode order and distance effects; it does not imply that every large field needs a second farmhouse immediately. Test a mode or range correction first.

Water is part of the production chain. Most surface crops need irrigated land, and weather can remove the supporting water. During a Drought, a crop may stop progressing because irrigation disappeared even though the farmhouse has workers.

Worked example: expanding the field can make idle status worse

Illustrative layout, not a tested save: a player marks a new carrot field two paths beyond the selected farmhouse's displayed work boundary. The farmhouse reports 'Nothing to do in range.' Adding more marked tiles in the same distant patch changes nothing. Mark a suitable irrigated tile inside the overlay or place a reachable farmhouse, then watch whether a farmer begins planting.

If the tile is in range but the worker only plants, switch the mode for a short diagnostic period and compare harvested stock. The aim is to identify the gate, not prescribe a permanent priority setting for every farm size.

Keep crop and consumption questions separate

A rising food stock is a different claim from 'this farmhouse harvested once.' A processed crop may need another building before beavers can eat it; faction-specific crop tables show different outputs. If a harvest succeeds but the colony still starves, compare usable food production with consumption instead of moving the farm again.

For a useful correction report, capture the building range, status, selected work mode, crop tile condition, weather and storage before and after one change. Avoid presenting a screenshot of green crops as proof that the farm was producing food.

Frequently asked questions

Why are workers idle beside a large field?

The field may be outside the selected farmhouse's work range, unmarked, unsuitable for that faction, or not ready. Read the building's status and overlay first.

Will adding another farmhouse always fix low food?

No. It will not restore irrigation, mature crops, missing processing or blocked storage. Find the first failed dependency before building.
