Choose the map action that matches the problem
The official Fearless Navigator update distinguishes three useful tasks: ordinary Charcoal Survey to reveal the surrounding map, Vista Survey at a Polaroid-linked viewpoint to reveal most of a region, and spray-can markers to leave reminders for supplies or hazards. A black or incomplete map is not evidence of a broken save by itself; the developer described cartography as opt-in and filled in bit by bit.
The detailed mapping source is v1.76 from 2020. Treat its feature description as a documented workflow, not a guarantee about later controls or an exact amount revealed. If the current build labels the action differently, record the platform and build and follow the in-game interface.
| Your goal | Use this action | Verify in game |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal nearby terrain | Charcoal Survey | Newly visible map area around the selected survey point |
| Reveal a large portion of one region | Find its Vista Polaroid, then survey the named Vista site | Whether that Vista entry or map area appears in the Journal/map |
| Remember a carcass, shelter, supply or danger | Spray-can survival marker | Marker icon and its location after reopening the map |
| Build a repeat travel route | Combine your own survey notes and markers | Landmarks, transition direction and next shelter; the map does not guarantee safety |

A cautious charcoal survey sequence
Hinterland's v1.76 release notes explicitly say surveys from higher altitudes reveal more map area. That supports choosing a safe overlook over surveying at random when you already know one is reachable; it does not mean every cliff or exposed ridge is worth a risky climb. The developer also describes mapping as incremental, so plan a route that still works if a survey reveals less than hoped.
- Record the region name displayed by your current Survival run and decide whether you need terrain, a remembered point or a travel route.
- Check your current map and Journal for an already discovered Vista Polaroid or survey entry before spending time retracing a known location.
- For ordinary mapping, choose a safe outdoor position with a broader view when one is available. Hinterland says altitude improves Charcoal Survey coverage in v1.76; the exact coverage is not specified here.
- Use the current in-game Survey action and inspect the map afterward. Do not assume the whole region is revealed or that the player marker will behave the same in every mode.
- For supplies and hazards, add the appropriate in-world marker separately, then reopen the map to confirm it landed where intended.
- Keep a return landmark and shelter in your notes. A larger map reveal does not make a route warm, short or safe by itself.

Use the region survey planner
The planner turns your own selected mapping goal into a short reminder list. It does not model line of sight, reveal area, charcoal yield or travel safety. Leave uncertain details unknown and use the map or Journal as the source of truth.

Discussion and limits
If the map behaves differently, compare notes on the Steam Discussions page and include Survival versus WINTERMUTE, platform, installed build, region, selected action and what the map showed. A community post is a clue to investigate, not a verified rule. You can also send GamerWin a reproducible correction using the contribution form.

Before you play
- I confirmed that I am using Survival Mode's map workflow, not assuming a story-mode map behaves identically.
- I chose Charcoal Survey, a discovered Vista survey, or a spray-can marker for the right purpose.
- I checked the Journal/map after the action rather than assuming a reveal succeeded.
- I kept a safe shelter and return landmark in my route plan.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Survival map mostly blank?
Hinterland described Survival cartography as opt-in: you reveal it bit by bit through surveys. Check your current map and Journal, then use the in-game Survey action.
Does surveying from higher ground help?
Hinterland's v1.76 release notes say surveying from higher altitudes increases the area revealed. They do not promise a fixed radius or make a dangerous climb worthwhile.
Does every Vista Polaroid reveal the whole region?
The developer says a Vista survey reveals the majority of a region, not necessarily every tile. Verify your map after the survey.
