The invite flow has two different code actions
The official support article gives a role-specific path: the player inviting generates a code, while the player joining enters a Friend Code. Both players should be in the intended Multiplayer flow; starting a Single Player session is not the documented invite route.
| Your role | Documented menu action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Host / inviter | Start Multiplayer, then Main Menu → Play with Friends → Generate Code. | You copied the generated code from the session you mean to host. |
| Joining player | Start Multiplayer, then Main Menu → Play with Friends → Friend Code. | You entered the host's generated code, not another friend's code or a stale message. |
| Either player | FAQ describes optional online co-op for up to three friends (four players total). | Check the current in-game player limit and help pages; this article does not diagnose network or account restrictions. |

Troubleshoot only the documented gates first
The developer's article establishes the menu route, but does not provide a universal diagnosis for every invite failure. Keep the first checks narrow so you can report a reproducible issue instead of changing unrelated settings.
- Confirm the intended save/session is opened in Multiplayer, not Single Player.
- Ask the inviter to generate a fresh code from Play with Friends → Generate Code.
- Have the joining player enter that code through Play with Friends → Friend Code.
- If the menu path is unavailable or the code is rejected, capture the exact message, platform, installed build, branch and which player generated/entered the code.
- Use the in-game report route or official support request for a persistent issue. Do not assume an old community post describes the current build.

Keep session conversion separate from invitations
Unknown Worlds also documents converting a multiplayer save to single-player from Main Menu → Host Multiplayer → Select Save Game → Convert to Single Player. That is a separate save-mode operation, not part of generating or entering a friend code; read the live confirmation before changing a save's mode.

Collect a useful issue report instead of changing unrelated settings
The official FAQ routes players to the in-game reporting tool or its support helpdesk. A small evidence packet helps distinguish an invite-flow mistake from a technical issue without assuming a cause.
| Record | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Platform and exact installed build/branch for both players | The support instructions may differ as Early Access updates roll out. |
| Who generated the code and who entered it | Confirms the inviter/joiner actions were not reversed. |
| Exact menu path and displayed error | Makes the issue reproducible without sharing the private invite code. |
| Whether Single Player or Multiplayer was selected | Separates a mode choice from a connection failure. |

Before you play
- I selected Multiplayer for the session.
- The host—not the joining player—generated the current invite code.
- The joining player entered it under Friend Code.
- I recorded the exact platform, build, role and error before contacting support.
Frequently asked questions
Who should use Generate Code?
The player inviting a friend uses Play with Friends → Generate Code, then sends that code to the friend.
Where does the invited player enter it?
The joining player starts Multiplayer and uses Play with Friends → Friend Code to add/enter the inviter's code.
Does the checklist prove my network or cross-play works?
No. It checks only the documented menu sequence and your confirmations; it cannot test accounts, services, connectivity, platform pairing or the current game build.
