Why a 4.4 save can fail after the 4.5 update
The 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ update changed Pop Group storage. Paradox explicitly says 4.4-and-earlier saves will not load correctly in 4.5. Treat this as a major-version compatibility boundary, not as proof that a particular mod or save file is corrupt.
The publisher's warning is also one-way: once a save has been opened in 4.5, it cannot be opened again in 4.4. The official post does not describe a reverse converter. Keep an untouched copy if you care about continuing the old campaign.

Back up the save folder before changing the game branch
Paradox lists separate save folders by operating system. Copy the entire folder to a separate location before switching branches; do not rely only on cloud sync as your safety copy.
- Close Stellaris before copying the folder.
- Copy the whole save-games folder to another location and keep the original untouched.
- Record which version last opened the campaign; do not infer this from the save filename alone.
| Platform | Published save-folder path | Scope note |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/save games/ | Folder names can vary with the Windows user profile |
| macOS | $HOME/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/save games/ | Use the home directory for the account that runs the game |
| Linux | $HOME/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/save games/ | This is the path in the developer's 4.5 announcement |

Use the Steam 4.4 rollback before opening the old campaign
For Steam, Paradox's announcement says to open Stellaris Properties, select the Betas tab, and choose ‘Stellaris 4.4 Rollback’. This is not a generic GOG, Microsoft Store or Console Edition menu path. Confirm the rollback branch has finished installing before loading the backed-up campaign.
- If the save has not yet been opened in 4.5, decide whether to finish that campaign on 4.4 first.
- Back up the save folder, then on Steam choose Properties > Betas > Stellaris 4.4 Rollback.
- Verify the displayed game version before loading the old save. Keep the backup until you confirm the campaign opens and saves under the intended branch.
- If the save was already opened in 4.5, do not switch it back to 4.4; preserve a copy and ask for help with the exact version and storefront.

Choose the safe next step for your save state
This table summarizes only the publisher's documented compatibility boundary. It cannot determine whether your specific file is intact.
| Your situation | Next safe step | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| 4.4 or earlier; not opened in 4.5; Steam | Back up, select Stellaris 4.4 Rollback, confirm branch, then load | That the old save will load correctly in 4.5 |
| 4.4 or earlier; not opened in 4.5; another storefront | Back up and check that storefront's current version/rollback guidance | That Steam's beta branch exists in another store |
| Old campaign already opened in 4.5 | Preserve a separate copy and do not downgrade it to 4.4 | That a reverse conversion is supported |
| New campaign or no old-save issue | Use the installed current version; keep ordinary backups | That this guide is a general crash diagnosis |

Before you play
- I identified whether the campaign is from 4.4 or earlier.
- I know whether that save has already been opened in 4.5.
- I made a separate copy of the save folder before changing branches.
- I used Steam-specific rollback steps only for Steam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open my old 4.4 save in 4.5 and then go back?
Paradox says 4.4-and-earlier saves will not load correctly in 4.5 and that a save opened in 4.5 cannot then be opened in 4.4. Back up and roll back first if you need to continue the old campaign.
Will ‘Stellaris 4.4 Rollback’ appear in every launcher?
The official click-path is specifically for Steam's Properties > Betas menu. Check the current rollback options for GOG or Microsoft Store rather than assuming the same UI.
Does the checker inspect or restore my saves?
No. It displays a checklist based on your selections and cannot access local game files.

- Stellaris 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ now available! (September 22, 2026) (Official)
Paradox Development Studio's official announcement says the Pop Group storage rework breaks save compatibility: 4.4-and-earlier saves will not load correctly in 4.5. It instructs players to back up first, gives Windows/Mac/Linux save-folder paths, and documents the Steam 4.4 Rollback branch; a save opened in 4.5 cannot then be opened in 4.4.
- Stellaris 4.5.1 released (checksum 358e) (September 24, 2026) (Official)
Official hotfix notes say Steam and GOG received the 4.5.1 hotfix first, with Microsoft Store to follow, and list a common first-day multiplayer out-of-sync fix involving custom AI empire spawning.
- Stellaris 4.5.3 patch released (4e91) (November 5, 2026) (Official)
The official Stellaris Steam community page lists 4.5.3 (checksum 4e91) as available via Steam, GOG and Microsoft Store. It includes hot-join out-of-sync fixes; the earlier 4.5.3 beta notes describe expanded comparisons for earlier detection. This guide does not claim every desync is fixed.
