Switch branches in Steam, not an in-game mode menu

Mega Crit's official v0.99 notes describe public-beta as an optional Steam branch. Their directions are for the Steam PC build; do not infer that the same branch switch exists on a different storefront or platform.

  1. In Steam Library, right-click Slay the Spire 2 and open Properties.
  2. Open Game Versions & Betas and choose public-beta.
  3. Wait for Steam to finish downloading/updating the selected branch before launching.
  4. To go back to default Main, open the same selector and choose None; wait for the branch update to finish.
  5. After launch, verify the branch/build shown by the game before comparing a card, relic, control or bug report.

Use the branch and date to resolve conflicting advice

The October newsletter checked for this guide reports a beta build and an upcoming planned update, while warning that work can be experimental and Main may catch up later. Treat those as dated status notes, not evergreen version numbers: revisit Mega Crit's latest announcement and the build displayed in your own game.

If a run or report no longer matches

Keep your version context before changing anything. Mega Crit describes beta as experimental and says its changes can be adjusted before Main. This page does not assert that switching branches preserves every in-progress run or that every update is backward-compatible.

Write a reproducible version note

When two players or sources disagree, a compact record makes the comparison useful without turning one screenshot into a universal balance claim.

Before you play

  • Use Steam's documented branch selector for the PC Early Access build.
  • Wait for the branch download to complete.
  • Check branch, build and source date before applying balance advice.
  • Treat future update timing as a plan that can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is public-beta a game mode?

No. The cited directions select a Steam game branch in Properties; it is not a Daily or Custom Run option.

How do I return to the default version?

Use Steam → Properties → Game Versions & Betas and choose None, then let Steam finish updating.

Does a beta card change apply to Main immediately?

Not necessarily. Mega Crit says beta changes can be revised before Main; compare the branch and in-game version with the dated official notes.
