Choose the right branch for the message
A frozen progression point, an incompatible-version warning and a save-write failure are different problems. Team Cherry says an incompatible-version message appears when a save opened in a newer version contains data that an older version lacks; the older version cannot open it to prevent bugs and data loss. A write failure instead points first to blocked write access or a full drive. Identify the exact message before trying recovery.
| What you see | Officially documented meaning | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Stuck or suspect save | Auto-saves are available at key points in Select Profile | Preserve current data; inspect the list and timestamp before choosing |
| Version Incompatible | The save was opened in a newer version with data absent from this older build | Use a compatible/newer build; do not downgrade-load the only copy |
| Save could not be written | Often security software blocks the save folder, or the drive is full | Check free space and a narrow folder-specific security block |
| Console save issue | PC folder paths are not listed for console | Use platform save management/support; do not apply PC paths |

Safe recovery sequence for a stuck profile
The official in-game restore option is not a non-destructive preview: Team Cherry explicitly warns that reverting overwrites the current save. If the platform offers a supported way to preserve the current profile, use that before restoring.
- Record the platform, store/launcher, game version, profile and last point that loaded successfully.
- On PC, locate the game data folder from the platform-specific path below. For Steam, Team Cherry says save files are nested in a folder named for the Steam user ID; non-Steam builds use a `default` sub-folder.
- Where permitted by your operating system and platform, copy the current profile to a separate location before using an in-game restore. Do not rename or edit files unless official instructions tell you to.
- From the main menu choose Select Profile, inspect the auto-save list and confirm the intended point/profile. Restore only after accepting that the selected auto-save replaces current progress.
- If no suitable entry exists or the profile remains stuck, stop repeated overwrite attempts and submit a reproducible report via the official form. Do not attach private identifiers.
Official PC locations and write errors
Team Cherry lists these PC reference folders. They are not console paths, and the Steam user-ID sub-folder matters. If the game says it cannot write a save, the official page says to check drive capacity and whether security software is blocking the listed folder. Avoid disabling protection globally; if your security product permits it, investigate only the precise game folder.
| PC platform | Official folder reference |

| Windows | %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/ |
| Mac | ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team-Cherry.Silksong/ |
| Linux | ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/ |

Use the local safety checker
Choose platform and symptom to get the corresponding path and next checks. The tool does not read files or access your game; on console it deliberately refuses to invent a folder path.

Before you play
- I identified the exact error instead of treating every save problem as corruption.
- I preserved a separate copy before any restore that could overwrite current progress.
- I did not open a newer save in an older build or repeatedly downgrade-test it.
- I used only PC paths on PC and platform support on console.
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo an in-game auto-save restore?
Team Cherry warns that reverting to a previous auto-save overwrites the current save. Preserve a separate copy first where supported; the official page does not promise an undo.
What does “Version Incompatible” mean?
The developer says a newer game version added data that the older version does not have. The older version cannot open that newer save to prevent bugs and data loss.
Where are console saves stored?
The official Help page lists Windows, Mac and Linux PC locations, but does not provide console file paths. Use the relevant platform's supported save-management tools instead.
