First identify which machine is actually empty or disconnected

Read the power graph and inspect the fuel inventory on each burner. A fuse trip after demand rises above available generation needs a different response from an empty burner or a cable break. A machine can sit idle from missing input or a blocked output even when power is available; confirm its status and actual inventory before rebuilding the network.

The community-maintained burner reference lists a 30 MW standalone burner at default clock and smaller 20 MW HUB burners. These are maximum capacities, not proof that a burner is continuously producing that output. The Wiki says biomass fuel consumption scales to demand; if coal or other generators share the network, inspect actual generation rather than allocating the whole grid load to a selected burner by assumption.

  1. Record the installed build, mods, burner types and clock settings; open a connected power graph and note current consumption and available generation.
  2. Check each burner's fuel inventory and connection. For a standalone burner using a conveyor input, trace the belt back to the actual source; do not assume the HUB burners use the same input arrangement.
  3. If the fuse tripped, reduce or isolate the confirmed excess load and restore fuel or generation before resetting it. Reconnect loads incrementally while watching the graph.
  4. If an individual producer remains idle on a powered grid, inspect its recipe, input, output and belt direction independently of the fuse.
  5. Change one identified fault and record the burner status and grid figures afterward.

Compare fuel as energy, not as a fixed real-time timer

The indexed Wiki lists solid biofuel at 450 MJ per item. One megawatt sustained for one second uses one megajoule, so an ideal standalone burner actually supplying 30 MW uses one solid biofuel in 15 seconds, or four per minute. An actual output of 15 MW would use one in 30 seconds, or two per minute, if that output remains constant.

At its 20 MW maximum a HUB burner has a theoretical 22.5-second burn per solid biofuel, approximately 2.67 per minute. These are upper-load comparisons for individual burners, not predictions from the number of connected machines. Varying load, startup, fuel starvation, other generators and idle machines alter the observed timeline.

Assumed burner outputOne 450 MJ fuel itemTheoretical consumptionLimit
Standalone at 30 MW15 seconds4 per minuteRequires sustained full output
Same standalone at 15 MW30 seconds2 per minuteRequires sustained 15 MW output

Work one leaf-to-fuel batch

Illustrative recipe ledger: the indexed leaf recipe consumes 10 leaves to make five biomass. Eight completed crafts use 80 leaves and produce 40 biomass. The standard solid biofuel recipe consumes eight biomass to make four fuel; five completed crafts use those 40 biomass to produce 20 solid biofuel. The whole-batch arithmetic assumes no existing stock, other uses, modified recipes or production bonuses.

Twenty units at 450 MJ each contain 9,000 MJ of gross fuel energy. At a constant 30 MW output that is 300 seconds, or five minutes. This is not five minutes of guaranteed net factory operation: it ignores energy spent converting the leaves, startup, belt availability, other loads, changing output and any other fuel use. If both conversion constructors draw 4 MW at 100% clock, the leaf step needs eight five-second crafts (160 MJ at 4 MW) and the biofuel step five four-second crafts (80 MJ at 4 MW): 240 MJ combined for the assumed active craft time, before any other load or idle behavior.

Keep the conversion chain from starving

At 100% clock, the referenced leaf constructor consumes 120 leaves per minute and produces 60 biomass per minute. A standard solid-biofuel constructor consumes 120 biomass per minute to produce 60 solid biofuel per minute. Therefore two continuously supplied leaf constructors could match one biofuel constructor's nominal biomass demand on paper. This is a rate comparison, not a claim that harvesting, belt layout, power or the fuel destination can sustain it.

The cited belt reference puts a Mk.1 belt at 60 items per minute and Mk.2 at 120. One Mk.1 input cannot continuously deliver the 120 leaves per minute consumed by one full-speed leaf constructor; a shared Mk.1 biomass belt also cannot carry the combined 120 biomass per minute to the biofuel constructor. Check available belt tiers and actual flow, hand-feed for a limited batch, or accept a lower sustained rate rather than treating the nominal machine ratio as a working layout.

Inspect each boundary in order: collected leaves in the source container, selected biomass recipe and input, biomass output, second constructor input and recipe, then the fuel destination. If one input is empty, add supply at that boundary; if an output is full, clear its destination. Both powered constructors contribute to grid demand, so a system near its generation limit can trip when conversion starts. On insufficient startup power, obtain a safe temporary fuel reserve and reduce other load; do not assume the chain will restart itself.

Transition to coal without removing the startup supply too early

Coal power has a different operating chain: coal must reach the generator and water must reach its fluid input, while water extractors themselves need power. Follow the related coal-startup guide to budget those inputs and startup demand. Retain the temporary biomass supply until the coal chain is operating and the connected grid has sufficient capacity; removing it before the water system is powered can interrupt the transition.

For a reproducible player report, note game build, platform, burner type, connected loads, fuel amount and the actual graph values before and after one change. A screenshot can show the machine and connections but should not be described as an energy measurement unless accompanied by an observation interval.

Before you play

  • Distinguish 30 MW standalone burners from 20 MW HUB burners at default clock.
  • Read actual generation and fuel inventory before using a full-load runtime estimate.
  • Budget the standard 80 leaves → 40 biomass → 20 solid biofuel batch separately from conversion power.
  • Check recipe unlocks, belt direction and both constructor inputs and outputs.
  • Keep temporary startup power until the coal and water chain is running.

Frequently asked questions

Why does solid biofuel last longer when the factory is idle?

The cited community reference says biomass burners scale fuel consumption with power demand. A full-load estimate is not a fixed timer when the selected burner's actual output changes.

Will 20 solid biofuel always run my factory for five minutes?

No. Five minutes is the gross 9,000 MJ ÷ 30 MW comparison for one burner sustaining that output, excluding the energy spent making the fuel and other loads.

Can I remove all biomass power as soon as I build a coal generator?

Not safely by assumption. The generator also needs its coal and water supply, and the water extractor needs power. Verify the startup chain and grid capacity before removing temporary power.
