Stop the automatic overwrite decision
A conflict dialog is a choice between states, not proof that either copy is correct. If the prompt offers a comparison, capture the displayed timestamps and keep the game closed until you have decided. Do not launch repeatedly while cloud sync is unresolved.
- Record the exact Steam conflict text and timestamps for local and cloud files, if shown.
- Do not select either copy yet if you cannot tell which has the latest intended progress.
- Keep the game closed while reviewing Steam's current cloud-save support instructions.
- If Steam offers a supported way to copy or preserve a version, make a separate backup before resolving; do not manually overwrite files from an unverified guide.
- After resolution, start the game and inspect Load Game rather than immediately choosing Continue.

Compare the in-game evidence
Capcom documents useful fields in the RE4 save menu: thumbnail, date/time, chapter, game mode, area/objective and manual-save count. A timestamp alone may not reveal which playthrough you intend to keep, so compare the chapter and mode too.
- Open Load Game after the cloud state is settled and inspect the candidate entries.
- Compare chapter, mode, objective and thumbnail against what you remember playing.
- If the expected entry is absent, stop making new saves until you have checked platform account and cloud state.
- Keep the alternate copy untouched until you have verified the loaded run is correct.

Decision table
| What you can verify | Safer next action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud timestamp is newer and expected chapter is present | Choose that copy only after reviewing Steam's prompt; inspect in-game list | Assuming newer always means correct |
| Local copy shows later intended chapter | Preserve it through Steam's supported flow before resolving | Clicking cloud overwrite without a backup |
| Neither timestamp/slot is recognizable | Cancel/stop and use Steam or Capcom support with details | Testing random save replacements |
| Different Steam account or account ID involved | Confirm the original account owns the progress | Downloading another player's save |

Before you play
- I wrote down local/cloud timestamps before choosing.
- I checked chapter, mode and objective after sync.
- I kept an alternate copy where supported.
- I did not launch repeatedly during an unresolved conflict.
- I used Steam's current official cloud instructions for recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always pick the newer timestamp?
Not automatically. First verify that the newer file contains the intended chapter and mode; timestamps can be misleading if the wrong account or session was used.
Does the Reddit/Steam discussion explain an official recovery?
No. Those are user-generated reports. Use Steam Support and Capcom's manual for current supported steps.
Will the worksheet decide which save is valid?
No. It records your notes locally and cannot inspect Steam Cloud or save files.
