Build an ordered list from the creator's own series
Treat the creator's description, collection or linked series page as the authority for what belongs together. Titles can contain jokes, alternate versions or prerequisite notes, so a numeric sort is a convenience—not proof that two items are consecutive parts.
- Open the Workshop item or collection from the creator and note the exact chamber titles and any stated prerequisites.
- Paste one title per line into the local planner. It recognizes explicit labels such as Part 2, Map 10, Chamber 3, Chapter 1 or a leading number.
- Check the ordered result against the creator's page. If any title has no recognizable sequence number, keep the creator's order and arrange that entry manually.
- Subscribe to the intended chamber items. Valve says ready-to-use Workshop items become available when Portal 2 starts; allow Steam to finish the download first.
- Launch Portal 2 and open its community/test-chamber browsing path. Select the specific chamber or course item rather than using a random Quickplay route when order matters.
- After completing a chamber, return to your checklist and mark it yourself. This page cannot tell whether the game has downloaded or recorded a completion.
| What you see | Safer way to handle it | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Creator has a numbered series | Use explicit part numbers and confirm prerequisites on the creator's Workshop page | That every item with a similar title belongs to the same course |
| Quickplay offers a chamber from later in the series | Back out and choose the intended item manually | That Quickplay is a sequential playlist |
| Subscribed item is missing at launch | Wait for Steam's download, restart Portal 2, then inspect the in-game chamber browser | That the subscription failed or that reinstalling is the first step |
| Unnumbered or remastered entry | Preserve creator order and inspect its description | That alphabetic or numeric title sorting proves the intended sequence |

Use the order planner
The planner runs in this browser tab only. It reads no Steam account, Workshop subscription, game file or completion state. Natural-number ordering prevents a plain text sort from placing 'Map 10' ahead of 'Map 2', but it cannot identify the creator's intended course.

Scope and community notes
The linked Steam Workshop feature and procedure are specific to the Steam release. The separate archived Reddit thread illustrates why players ask about map order; it is not current official documentation. Portal 2 is also sold on other platforms, but these subscription steps should not be applied to a console version that does not expose Steam Workshop.

Before you play
- I verified every chamber against the creator's page or collection.
- I used explicit part numbers and reviewed unnumbered titles manually.
- I let Steam finish subscribing/downloading before launching Portal 2.
- I selected the intended chamber rather than expecting Quickplay to preserve order.
Frequently asked questions
Does subscribing to a Steam Workshop collection guarantee the levels play in sequence?
Valve's Workshop page explains subscription and availability, but does not guarantee sequence enforcement. Follow the creator's order and select each chamber manually.
Can this planner see which chambers I own or finished?
No. It only sorts titles you paste into the open page and does not contact Steam or Portal 2.
Sources & revision notes
Editorial revision: November 7, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.
- Steam Workshop: Portal 2 (Official)
Valve's Steam Workshop page describes Portal 2 community test chambers and its Ready-To-Use behavior: subscribe to an item and it should be available when Portal 2 starts. It does not promise that a collection's numerical order is enforced by Quickplay.
- Portal 2 on Steam: modes, Workshop and editor (Official)
Valve's store page lists Steam Workshop, level editor, online co-op and shared/split-screen co-op. It describes the two-player co-op campaign as separate from single-player. The platform-specific procedures in these guides are for the Steam PC version unless stated otherwise.
- Archived r/Portal discussion: playing numbered Workshop maps in order (Community)
An archived player question and replies about numbered custom-map series and Quickplay selecting maps out of sequence. It is a dated anecdote, not a Valve guarantee; the guide uses it only to frame the ordering problem and keeps the actual ordering manual.
