Obsidian crash checklist

Triage the symptom before touching files

Obsidian's support checklist separates system requirements, GPU drivers, shader cache, file integrity, Windows updates, overheating and selected CPU/graphics cases. A crash at launch, a crash after a long session and a brief shader stutter are not the same symptom.

Follow the reversible PC repair sequence

Make one change, restart if requested, and repeat the same launch path. If a step does not match the error or storefront, stop and consult the vendor rather than translating instructions blindly.

  1. Capture the exact error, time, storefront and whether the game reached the menu. Remove private identifiers from any screenshot before sharing.
  2. Check minimum PC requirements and install the current GPU driver from the manufacturer; restart Windows.
  3. If the issue is graphical corruption, stutter or a black screen after a driver/update, follow the current Obsidian shader-cache instructions for your GPU. Cache rebuild may temporarily take longer; do not interrupt it without a reason.
  4. Use the actual store's verify/repair feature: Steam Verify integrity; Xbox app Manage > Files > Verify and Repair; follow the relevant launcher instructions for other storefronts.
  5. Install pending Windows updates and restart. If crashes follow heat buildup, inspect temperatures using the PC maker's utility and check airflow; do not guess at safe limits.
  6. For 13th/14th-generation Intel systems, consult the exact motherboard or prebuilt maker for an appropriate current BIOS and microcode. If unsure, ask the OEM before flashing.
  7. If still reproducible, send Obsidian support the minimized reproduction, storefront/build, specs and relevant sanitized log excerpt through its support portal.

Understand the shader-cache trade-off

Obsidian says clearing the GPU shader cache may help when stutter, black screens or visual issues appear after a driver update or patch. It also warns the cache has to be rebuilt and can take time. Disable/delete/re-enable steps differ for NVIDIA and AMD; use the support article for the exact vendor sequence instead of a generic cache-cleaner utility.

When to stop and send a useful support report

If the same crash still reproduces after the steps that match its symptom, stop escalating system changes. Record the exact storefront, game build, GPU driver, Windows version, reproduction path and whether it occurs before or after the menu. Include only sanitized excerpts or screenshots requested by the vendor; never attach account tokens or unrelated personal files. This evidence bundle helps support separate a game issue from a driver, launcher or hardware-specific fault without claiming a diagnosis.

  1. Reproduce once using the same steps and note the approximate time and error text.
  2. Write down the game build, storefront, OS, CPU and GPU model, plus the last reversible change.
  3. Remove account names, email addresses, local paths and unrelated identifiers from screenshots/logs.
  4. Send the minimum relevant report to Obsidian support and stop further BIOS/voltage experiments unless the OEM directs them.

Before you play

  • I recorded a reproducible symptom and storefront before changing settings.
  • I used the exact GPU vendor and launcher instructions, not a third-party cleanup script.
  • Any BIOS or hardware-level action is confirmed by the device manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Should I clear shader cache after every crash?

No. Obsidian scopes it to certain graphical glitches, stutter, black screens or performance drops after a driver/update and warns it must rebuild.

Does this page diagnose my PC?

No. It is a source-based order of checks; it cannot see system logs, temperatures, hardware or save files.
