Keep the original and backup separate
Mobius states that the latest good save for each profile may be recoverable from the game's Backup folder and that the game can prompt at startup if data is missing or unreadable. Its manual route copies items from Backup/<profile> to SteamSaves/<profile>; the official page warns Steam Cloud may need to be disabled temporarily for the copy to take effect.
| What you see | First safe action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Game offers a restore prompt | Read the prompt and preserve current folders before deciding | Clicking through without knowing which copy is restored |
| Steam save is missing/corrupt | Copy the whole affected profile and Backup folder elsewhere | Editing the only surviving copy |
| Epic save is missing/corrupt | Confirm you are using the Epic Saves path | Pasting into SteamSaves by habit |
| Steam Cloud conflict prompt | Stop and compare local/cloud timestamps after backup | Downloading a cloud copy over an unpreserved local save |

Use Mobius's PC recovery sequence
The developer's listed folder names distinguish SteamSaves (Steam) from Saves (Epic). Do not substitute those Windows paths for console, macOS or Linux instructions, and keep cloud synchronization disabled only for the deliberate recovery window described by the support article.
- Quit Outer Wilds and record whether the store is Steam or Epic and which profile name is affected.
- Copy the entire Outer Wilds folder—including Backup and the current save folder—to a separate safe location before changing anything.
- For Steam, use the Windows path shown in Mobius support under SteamSaves/<profile>; for Epic, use Saves/<profile>.
- If the game offers to restore unreadable/missing data, compare the prompt with the retained backup before accepting.
- For manual recovery, follow Mobius's documented folder-copy steps using a duplicate: copy the backup contents for the same profile into the matching active profile folder.
- If Steam Cloud blocks the copy, temporarily disable synchronization only as Mobius describes, launch and verify the profile, then preserve a second copy before optionally re-enabling sync.
- If recovery fails, restore the untouched copy and contact the developer; do not rename profiles or download saves from strangers.

Frequently asked questions
Does this guide recover console saves?
No. The linked paths and manual instructions are Windows PC-specific.
Should I download the cloud copy when prompted?
Not before preserving the local profile and comparing what would be overwritten; Mobius specifically documents cloud precautions in recovery cases.
Can the worksheet see my save folder?
No. It only records your selections in the browser; it cannot access files or disable cloud sync.
