Inspect succession before reacting to a single warning
A ruler's death is part of Old World's core cycle, but the next ruler and political result depend on the visible characters and current state. The official overview explains that heirs continue the line and choose a new Ambition on succession. Do not treat a community comment about another dynasty as a prediction for yours.
- Open the character/succession UI and note the current ruler, named heir and any listed succession order.
- Check the ruler's age/status and visible family relationships without assuming an exact death date.
- Review the heir's traits, relationships and likely Ambition options shown by the game.
- If a succession or family event appears, read its own outcome text before spending Orders to change city stewardship.

Compare city stewardship across all four families
Mohawk states that each nation has four noble families and warns about both extremes: a family with too many cities may consider itself entitled to the throne, while one with too few can envy rivals and incite revolts. That supports reviewing distribution; it does not establish a numerical optimum independent of the nation, characters and scenario.
| Visible pattern | Review | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| One family holds many cities | Family-city assignment and current opinion/loyalty cues | That revolt is guaranteed |
| A family holds very few cities | Whether visible envy/loyalty warnings are present and what cities can be reassigned | That every family needs an equal count |
| Heir is not the current ruler's preferred character | Read the actual succession list and current rule | That an older guide's succession law applies to this save |
| A family/courtier warning appears after an event | Event text, character relationships and current patch | That a generic balancing formula predicts the result |
Make one reversible-looking decision at a time
Some stewardship or succession actions may be costly or difficult to undo in a campaign. Record the current assignment and visible family status before changing it; use the game's confirmation and cost text as authoritative. Ask the community for context only after including the current build, nation, DLC and scenario, without sharing private multiplayer information.

Frequently asked questions
Should I give every family the same number of cities?
The developer warns about both over- and under-allocation but does not publish a universal equal-city formula.
Can this checklist tell me who will inherit?
No. Read the succession order in your current save; the checklist cannot access or predict your dynasty.
Does family imbalance guarantee revolt?
No. The official overview describes risk tendencies, not a deterministic outcome for every save.
