Compare the consequences, not the labels
Jagex's New Player Guide says Ironman status can only be chosen on Tutorial Island and identifies Paul, the Ironman Tutor, as the in-game choice point. Its descriptions distinguish trade and banking restrictions, death consequences, and group play. The guide is dated August 12, 2025, so treat the current in-game prompt and newer Jagex rules as authoritative.
| Mode in Jagex's guide | Documented tradeoff | Who should pause before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | The normal account without the listed Ironman restrictions. | Anyone who wants the least restrictive start or is unsure. |
| Ironman | Self-sufficient: cannot trade with players, buy from the Grand Exchange, or pick up player-dropped items, according to the guide. | Anyone who expects to rely on player trade or Grand Exchange purchases. |
| Hardcore Ironman | Ironman restrictions plus one life; on death the account is not deleted, but Hardcore status is lost and the account continues as regular Ironman. | Anyone who has not intentionally accepted the risk of losing Hardcore status. |
| Ultimate Ironman | Ironman restrictions plus no bank access; Jagex's guide says it is not recommended for new players. | New players or anyone who expects conventional bank storage. |
| Group Ironman | Team of 2–5; group members can trade within the group and use shared storage, while trade outside the group remains restricted. | Players who have not agreed on a team, expectations, and mode together. |

Make the Tutorial Island decision deliberately
Do not confuse a mode's challenge with a generic difficulty setting: the cited restrictions change how items and account progress are obtained. If you cannot accept a listed consequence, defer the restricted-mode choice and verify current Jagex rules first.
- Before interacting with Paul, say out loud whether you want normal access to player trading and the Grand Exchange. If yes or uncertain, the cited guide's Standard mode is the least restrictive option.
- If considering Ironman, check that you are comfortable sourcing progression without player trades, Grand Exchange purchases, or player-dropped items.
- If considering Hardcore, decide whether losing Hardcore status on death is acceptable. Jagex says the account is not deleted; it continues as regular Ironman after status loss.
- If considering Ultimate, stop and account for no bank access. Jagex explicitly warns that this mode is not recommended for new players.
- If considering Group Ironman, confirm the current group size and shared-storage rules in the live prompt; Jagex's page describes groups of 2–5 and within-group trade/shared storage.
- Read the current confirmation screen before leaving Tutorial Island. The cited page states this is the Ironman-status choice point; it does not document every possible later downgrade, conversion, or group-change policy.

Use community discussions for questions, not account guarantees
Player discussions can help clarify how someone handled a self-imposed goal or group plan, but a post is not proof of current Jagex mode rules. Include OSRS, the exact mode, and the date when asking; never share passwords, recovery codes, or account identifiers. For account status or a mode decision prompt, use Jagex's own support and current in-game text.

Run a final mode check before leaving the island
The comparison is intentionally conservative because the cited guide is dated and does not enumerate every future account-conversion route.
- Read each restriction on the current in-game confirmation screen; do not rely on a remembered guide or a friend's account settings.
- For Standard, confirm that unrestricted trading and bank use are more important to you than a self-imposed account restriction.
- For any Ironman variant, make sure every player in a proposed group has agreed on the mode and understands the trade/storage limits before confirming.
- If a consequence or conversion rule is unclear, pause and verify it in current Jagex documentation instead of assuming a later undo is available.

Before you play
- I checked that this is OSRS, not RuneScape (RS3).
- I read the current Tutorial Island mode prompt before confirming.
- I understand which trade, Grand Exchange, death, bank, or group rules I am choosing.
- I did not assume a later conversion, group transfer, or recovery option from a community anecdote.
