Confirm what is actually installed
Start with the exact game build shown in your client, then note platform and whether the item is a Java mod or a JS/JSON mod. The project's v8 wiki and release pages identify the 160 series; its mod index documents selection behavior that differs by mod type. The mod browser's presence is not proof that the selected file matches your installed client.
- Record the complete build string from the game, such as the v8 Build 160 series—not merely 'v8'.
- Open the mod's own detail or repository and identify its declared minimum game version and release type.
- If the issue happens only in one save or multiplayer server, record that separately; do not update or remove mods in the only copy of a campaign just to test a guess.

Use the matching rule for the mod type
The maintainer's browser rules say the most recent GitHub release matching the game's version is prioritized for Java mods when a valid JAR is available. For JS/JSON mods, the latest main-branch commit is used; non-Java releases without a matching target tag are ignored. This means a mod can update differently even when both appear in the same in-game browser.
| Mod type / metadata | What the index says | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Java mod with a release | A valid JAR is required; newest release matching the game version is prioritized | Release assets, target tag and declared minGameVersion |
| JS/JSON mod | Latest commit on the main branch is downloaded | Recent commits, main-branch state and compatibility declaration |
| Release tagged [v160] | Targets Build 160 and its revisions, according to the maintainer | Whether the client is actually on Build 160-series |
| Release tagged [v160.3] | Targets that specified revision, not 160.1 or 160.4 per the index | Exact release tag vs your installed revision |
| No matching Java release | The index may fall back to the newest release | Whether the author says that fallback is compatible; do not assume |

Decide whether to update, disable or wait
If the game's own build and mod target do not match, first check the author's release notes and a separate test world. The maintainer's examples distinguish [v160] from a patch-specific [v160.3] target, and show minGameVersion 160 for v8 versus 161 (or the applicable target) for later builds. Those are packaging rules—not a promise that a mod works, preserves data or is reviewed by the index.
- Compare the client build with the mod's target tag and minGameVersion; capture the exact mismatch.
- Read the mod author's dated notes for known changes or a compatible branch. Do not install a random re-upload as a substitute for the author source.
- Back up a campaign before testing changed mods; test the change in a disposable map or copy and make one change at a time.
- If the same error remains, capture its exact text and report build, platform, mod type, mod version and reproduction steps to the author or a clearly labeled player discussion.

What this guide cannot establish
A target version is metadata, not an independent compatibility audit. The automatic index does not certify authors, security, content quality, server rules, save compatibility, or that a mod is safe to install. GamerWin has not downloaded or tested any mod covered here. Remove private paths, usernames, tokens and save files before posting a report.

Before you play
- I recorded the exact game build, platform, mod type and mod version.
- I compared the release target and minGameVersion with the installed build.
- I checked the original author's notes and preserved a separate backup before testing.
- I understand that the index's version match is not a safety or compatibility guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Does [v160] mean only one exact patch?
The MindustryMods maintainer says [v160] targets Build 160 and its revisions, whereas a tag such as [v160.3] targets that specified revision rather than 160.1 or 160.4.
Why does a mod have no matching release?
Java and JS/JSON mods have different index rules. Check the mod type, valid JAR/release, target tag and minimum game version before retrying.
Does appearing in the browser mean the mod is safe?
No. The browser index documents listing and version-selection criteria; it does not certify mod safety, quality or save compatibility.
