Start with the version gate
The official Hytale Server Manual says the protocol hash must match exactly. If a client updated but a private dedicated server did not, an otherwise valid address may still be rejected. Record the launcher patchline and the version/protocol reported by the client and server; do not assume that the Release and Pre-Release channels are interchangeable.
For a friend's hosted world, note which person is the host and whether the failure occurs before the world appears, during loading, or after entry. This splits a version/setup mismatch from a network stall without claiming the symptoms uniquely identify a cause.
- Have the host and joining player record the exact displayed game version and selected patchline; dedicated-server owners also record the server build/protocol.
- Confirm that every player and the server use the same protocol version. Update the server before testing again if its protocol differs; do not downgrade a world or copy server files over an existing save as a first fix.
- For an affected Release/Pre-Release install, confirm the intended channel in Launcher → Settings and use the corresponding server package. Keep notes, test world, and server build tied to that channel.
- If the protocol matches, record the exact error, the join stage, host operating system, whether the player is on Wi-Fi, and whether the server is dedicated or player-hosted. Then check the applicable network path below.

For a dedicated server, inspect UDP rather than opening ports blindly
Hytale's server manual identifies QUIC over UDP and a default bind of 0.0.0.0:5520. A custom --bind port changes which UDP port the firewall and router need. The manual says TCP forwarding is not required; opening a broad range or disabling a firewall is not part of its instructions.
This is a configuration checklist, not a remote port test. Public IP, carrier-grade NAT, host firewall, router forwarding, and server process state all require the operator to inspect their own environment.
| Server setup | Check from official docs | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Default dedicated server | Server listens on UDP 5520 unless changed | Check host firewall and router rule for UDP 5520 |
| Custom --bind port | Configured UDP port differs from 5520 | Use that configured UDP port at each network layer |
| TCP-only router rule | Hytale's documented transport is QUIC over UDP | Add the narrow UDP rule; do not remove unrelated protections |
| Player-hosted world | Dedicated-server port instructions may not apply | Record the exact host/join stage and follow the official hosted-world flow |

Match the failure to the 0.7.3 note—do not overgeneralize it
The official Update 7 hotfix page lists fixes for a join hanging after a lost packet, host details arriving late when joining a friend's world, and lag spikes/stalls while friends join on Wi-Fi/home routers or busy upload connections. If the observed issue fits one of these, record that comparison and verify the installed build before repeating the test.
A mismatch between symptoms and the release-note wording is a reason to gather diagnostics, not to assert that your router, ISP, server, or save is defective. The update does not claim to eliminate all latency, packet loss, NAT, firewall, authentication, or server-capacity problems.
| Observed symptom | What the note supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Join hangs then fails after packet loss | A corresponding 0.7.3 join fix is listed | That every timeout is packet loss or fixed on every installation |
| Friend join fails when host details arrive late | A matching 0.7.3 hosted-world fix is listed | That all invitations or player-hosted worlds work |
| Stalls during friend joins on Wi-Fi/router or busy upload | 0.7.3 reports fewer such stalls | That replacing a router or changing unrelated settings is required |
| Dedicated server works locally but not externally | The manual supports a UDP/port/NAT inspection | That the port rule alone proves public reachability |

Worked example: local join succeeds, friend join fails
Illustrative diagnostic, not a live connection test: if the host can enter a dedicated world locally but a friend cannot, first compare the client's exact protocol with the server. If equal, inspect the configured UDP bind and narrow UDP forwarding/firewall rules. Record whether the failure resembles one of the 0.7.3 cases and whether the friend is on Wi-Fi. If none fits, use the report guide rather than declaring the cause from a single symptom.

Before you play
- Client and dedicated server protocol/build are recorded and match exactly.
- The selected Release or Pre-Release channel is recorded for client and server.
- For a dedicated server, the configured UDP bind and firewall/forwarding port are checked; no broad firewall disable was used.
- The exact join stage, error, host/join role and relation to a named 0.7.3 fix are recorded.
Frequently asked questions
Does Hytale use TCP for the dedicated-server port?
The current official server manual says Hytale uses QUIC over UDP and the default port is 5520; it says TCP forwarding is not required.
Can I join if my client and server are on different updates?
The manual says client and server must use the exact same protocol version; mismatches are rejected.
Does Update 7 fix every friend-join problem?
No. The official notes list specific cases—such as a lost-packet join hang and stalls on Wi-Fi/home routers—not a universal fix for every network failure.

- Hypixel Studios Support: Hytale Server Manual (Official)
Official dedicated-server manual updated October 12, 2026; checked November 5, 2026. Current instructions specify Java 25, at least 4 GB memory, exact client/server protocol match, QUIC over UDP (default port 5520), and system load varying with player behavior and world area.
- Hytale: Update 7 Hotfixes (Official)
Official Update 7 hotfix post checked November 5, 2026. Version 0.7.3 lists particular lost-packet, late-host-details, Wi-Fi/router stall, and upload-connection fixes; these are not a guarantee for every failed join.
- Hytale: Early Access Launch Notes (Official)
Official January 13, 2026 announcement says Hytale entered Early Access with an unfinished, incomplete feature set and expected bugs. Use this as version-context, not a promise about future platform availability.
- Hytale: Pre-Release Patch Notes (Update 8) (Official)
Official Update 8 pre-release notes checked November 5, 2026; the page was updated with Part 3 on November 5. It says the notes update weekly, identifies Launcher → Settings → Pre-Release, routes bugs to the in-game Bug Reporter, and suggestions to Feedback Request with 'pre-release' noted. Part 3 lists a 200 MB bug-report attachment limit.
