Browser-local charm arithmetic

Charm notch and Overcharmed risk checker

Enter the capacity and costs shown in your own Hollow Knight loadout.

Overcharmed risk

Overcharmed by 1 notch: the community reference describes incoming damage as doubled while overcharmed. Remove or swap a charm at a bench if you do not want that risk.

This adds only your typed costs. It cannot read a save or recommend an effective charm build; the damage warning is attributed to the linked community mechanics reference.

Read the loadout, then total the notch costs

The community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki says charms can be equipped or unequipped at benches, the Knight starts with 3 notches, and 8 more can be acquired for a maximum of 11. Check the number shown for each charm in your own inventory; the worksheet intentionally does not bundle an assumed endgame loadout.

  1. At a bench, note your current Charm Notch capacity from the installed game.
  2. For each charm you plan to wear, copy its displayed notch cost into the checker as a comma- or space-separated list, such as 3, 2, 1.
  3. Compare the sum with your capacity. A total above capacity is the Overcharmed branch; the wiki describes incoming damage as doubled while it lasts.
  4. If you do not want the risk, sit at a bench and remove or swap a charm until the total is at or below capacity. Re-enter the costs after any change.

Use Overcharm as a deliberate trade, not a hidden difficulty setting

The wiki describes an explicit sequence for forcing a charm above the remaining notch capacity and notes a purple cracked appearance in the loadout. This guide does not tell a player that the trade is worthwhile: doubled damage can turn a mistake into a death, and any boss/build recommendation depends on the player and encounter. The checker simply makes the arithmetic and stated risk visible.

Limits and evidence

Charm cost and the Overcharmed effect are sourced from a community-maintained wiki rather than an official Team Cherry mechanics manual. Steam's official product page establishes the original game listing; it does not verify this player's current charm state. We did not play a fight, test a charm combination, or inspect a save.

Before you play

  • I used the charm costs displayed in my own game.
  • I entered my current capacity, not the 11-notch maximum unless I have actually earned it.
  • I understand that an over-cap total is a damage-risk warning, not a build recommendation.
  • I will change the loadout at a bench and verify it in-game.

Frequently asked questions

Does the checker know which charms I equipped?

No. It only adds the costs you type and the capacity you select; it cannot read the game, a screenshot or a save.

Does Overcharmed always mean exactly twice every damage source?

The linked community reference says incoming damage is doubled, with a stated exception for environmental damage while invulnerable. Check that source and the installed game for edge cases; this page is not a combat test.

Can the checker recommend the best charm combination?

No. It checks notch arithmetic and the documented risk only. It does not model charm effects, synergies, boss patterns, skill or play style.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 7, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Steam Store: Hollow Knight (Official)

Team Cherry's Steam product page identifies Hollow Knight and lists Steam Cloud support. The listing is specific to Steam; it does not establish console save-transfer behavior.

  2. Hollow Knight Wiki: Charms and Charm Notches (Community)

Community-maintained mechanics reference for notch limits, notch sources and Overcharmed damage. Verify the current loadout and displayed notch cost in the installed game; GamerWin did not test a save or boss encounter.

  3. r/HollowKnight player discussions (Community)

External, user-generated discussion—not a GamerWin forum, official support, or verified gameplay evidence. State platform, game edition/build and the exact symptom; never post account credentials or private save files.
