Keep the source and destination distinct
A game installation, an edition entitlement and a save are different items. Sony's announcement identifies PS4-to-PS5 save transfer for Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut; PlayStation's general console-transfer guidance describes copying supported save data between consoles. Neither source says that a missing, corrupted or overwritten save can be reconstructed.
| Before launch on destination | Why it matters | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Source PS4 save still visible | Confirms there is a candidate source; it does not prove cloud sync | Record character/story progress and timestamp if displayed |
| Same PlayStation account on source and target | Account identity is needed for the standard console transfer path | Confirm the account locally; never share its password |
| PS5 edition and destination free space ready | Edition/data transfer are separate from save ownership | Use the on-screen/current official transfer route, then verify the target slot |
| Destination already has a later save | Import or overwrite choices may replace local state | Stop and preserve both versions before accepting a destructive prompt |

A cautious transfer sequence
- On the PS4, launch the campaign edition and confirm the expected save is present; do not delete or replace it.
- Confirm the PS4 and PS5 use the intended PlayStation account and are updated; use Sony's current console data-transfer instructions for supported save data.
- On PS5, install/launch the appropriate Director's Cut edition and follow the current in-game or console prompt for importing the PS4 save.
- Before continuing, verify the target slot and visible progress. If the PS5 already contains a different campaign save, do not overwrite it until you have a separate preserved copy where supported.
- If no source save appears, stop repeated transfers and contact PlayStation support with console generation, edition, account region and exact menu state.

What this cannot recover
The guide does not inspect a console, PS Plus cloud storage, account or save file. Sony's dated announcement establishes a transfer path, not a data-repair service. Do not use Legends cross-progression as a substitute for campaign save migration.

- I preserved any destination save before accepting an overwrite prompt.
- I verified the target slot before continuing the campaign.
Frequently asked questions
Does Sony guarantee recovery if my PS4 save is corrupted?
No. The announcement supports a transfer path for an existing save; it does not promise repair or recovery.
Can Legends progress replace the campaign save?
No. Legends cross-progression and the single-player campaign save are separate systems.

- PlayStation Blog: Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and save transfer (Official)
Sony's dated 2021 announcement says an existing PS4 save can transfer to PS5 and identifies the PS4/PS5 Director's Cut editions. This is edition-transition guidance, not a guarantee that a particular save or account is recoverable today.
- PlayStation Store: Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (Official)
Sony's listing states that PS4 and PS5 players can play together and Legends progression carries between those consoles. The standalone product is Legends multiplayer, not the single-player campaign; its listing also states internet and PlayStation Plus are required.
