Choose the symptom-matched starting point
Epic provides separate support pages for its in-game Performance Mode and Windows low-FPS troubleshooting. Begin with the least disruptive change that matches the symptom; avoid stacking every Windows tweak at once because you will not know which one mattered.
| Symptom | First check | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Low average FPS | Confirm Fortnite uses the high-performance GPU; capture resolution and rendering mode | Windows app and driver settings. |
| Hitching or frame drops | Record whether it happens after a patch/driver change; restart after requested settings changes | Can be shader/driver/CPU/storage specific; this guide does not diagnose. |
| Need lower rendering load | Test in-game Performance Mode and restart | May reduce visual fidelity; compare your own scene. |
| Running out of install space | Review optional High Resolution Textures in Epic launcher | Changing install options affects disk usage, not a guaranteed FPS amount. |
Apply Performance Mode from the current menu
Epic's published path is in Fortnite's Video settings. The official article says the change is applied after selecting Apply and restarting the game. If the menu label differs in a later build, check Epic's current help page instead of forcing an old launch command.
- Open Fortnite and select the player icon, then Settings > Video.
- Under Display, find Rendering Mode and choose Performance; select Apply.
- Restart Fortnite before judging the result.
- For a separate disk-space option, use Epic Games Launcher > Library > Fortnite > Options and review High Resolution Textures. This is optional and not a substitute for measuring performance.
- Repeat the same location/mode/route at the same resolution, then compare smoothness and visual quality. Revert if the tradeoff is worse for you.

Check Windows app-GPU assignment
Epic's PC checklist includes selecting Fortnite's executable under Windows Graphics settings and assigning the high-performance GPU. This matters most on systems with switchable graphics; desktops with a single GPU may not expose a meaningful choice. Follow the current Windows screen names on your installed version.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics (or Graphics settings).
- Add FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe from the installed game folder if it is not already listed.
- Open Options for that app and select High performance, then Save.
- If Windows requests a restart or the selection does not take effect, restart and recheck the same test scene.
- Keep the previous value noted so you can undo the change if there is no improvement.

Make a one-change comparison, not a promise
Epic recommends several Windows power and gaming settings, but results depend on the PC and can carry tradeoffs. Capture the game version, resolution, mode and observed frame rate from your own tool before and after. A support checklist describes what to try; it is not a measured review of every GPU.
| Control | How to compare | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Mode | Same scene, camera route and resolution before/after | Visual fidelity changes; restart is required. |
| GPU assignment | Confirm the selected discrete/high-performance GPU | Not useful on every single-GPU desktop. |
| Windows Game Mode / Game Bar | Change only if relevant, then restart and repeat | Do not turn off overlays if you depend on accessibility/capture features without considering the tradeoff. |
| Power plan | Use the device maker's supported power option | Higher power can mean more heat, fan noise and battery drain. |

Before you play
- I recorded my own baseline and game mode/resolution.
- I changed one setting and restarted when required.
- I compared the same scene and kept the option only if its visual/performance tradeoff works for me.
Frequently asked questions
Does Performance Mode guarantee more FPS?
Epic says it may help low frame rates; actual results vary and this guide contains no benchmark.
Can I remove high-resolution textures without changing render mode?
Epic describes that as a separate optional launcher install setting. Review current disk-space implications before applying it.
