Work-order blocker checklist

Choose the closest status or symptom. This organizes checks; it cannot inspect your fortress or select a fix for you.

Capture evidence before changing anything
  1. Record the exact order status, game version, mode, assigned workshop and condition text.
  2. Check Manager/office, input item and stockpile route, then worker eligibility in that order.
  3. If you ask other players, share the reproducible details but not credentials or private save files.

Next: Re-open the same order and confirm whether its displayed status changed.

Browser-local selection only; nothing is uploaded or saved, and it resets on reload. It does not read or modify a fort, game memory, saves, work orders, stockpiles, population or game files. Guidance is source-based and may lag a later game patch.

Read the order's state before editing it

The work-order screen lists orders and their status. Conditions can combine: the wiki describes multiple conditions as AND, so every selected condition must be satisfied. A valid-looking order can therefore wait because one threshold, material type or frequency rule is false. Record the exact status and conditions before changing them.

  1. Open the fortress work-order screen and select the stalled order.
  2. Read its status, quantity, repeat frequency, conditions and any assigned workshop; capture the exact displayed wording for a correction report.
  3. If there are several conditions, evaluate each one against current stocks and the comparator shown. Do not assume one satisfied condition starts an order.
  4. Check whether the order is paused, completed, waiting for a manager, or simply has no eligible job; these are different states.

Check Manager appointment and validation

The community wiki says work orders require a Manager and describes assigning an office with a chair. It also notes that once a fortress reaches 20 citizens, orders require Manager validation before they are performed. Because this is a community-maintained reference and behavior can change, use the order status and current interface rather than inferring a fault from population alone.

What the current UI suggestsNext checkInterpret carefully

Trace the material-to-workshop path

A task may be eligible in principle but unable to find an item that matches its exact material restrictions. Workshop tasks show required items, and the game's stockpiles can filter what is accepted. Check each link in sequence: item exists, pile accepts it, dwarf can haul it, workshop/task accepts it, and a worker can perform the labor.

  1. Open the workshop task and note its displayed product and required material/category.
  2. Find the candidate input item and confirm it is not reserved, forbidden, inaccessible or excluded by the relevant stockpile/workshop settings.
  3. Check stockpile links and whether the destination workshop is allowed to draw from that pile; verify a hauling route exists.
  4. Check the relevant work detail/labor and job list for an eligible dwarf, access issue or higher-priority competing task.
  5. Change one constraint at a time, then observe the same order status before making further edits.

Choose a safe fix and report a reproducible case

Removing all conditions or duplicating orders can cause overproduction once the bottleneck clears. Prefer changing one confirmed blocker, observe whether the existing order advances, and preserve the old settings if you are unsure. If asking other players, include version, mode, order text/status, condition values, workshop and relevant stockpile filters; omit personal save files.

Limits of the checker

The checklist below responds only to the symptom you select. It does not read game memory, a save, stockpiles, population, order status or workshop screen. It does not edit an order or confirm that a proposed fix worked. The wiki is community maintained and explicitly warns that some articles may need updating.

Before you play

  • I copied the exact order status, conditions, repeat rule and workshop assignment.
  • I checked the Manager position and the office requirement shown by this build.
  • I traced one matching input through stockpile filters, access, task eligibility and labor.
  • I changed one confirmed blocker and watched the original order before duplicating it.

Frequently asked questions

Does every order need manual manager approval?

The cited community wiki says validation is especially required once the fortress reaches 20 citizens. Check the installed build's order status; this threshold is not independently tested here.

Why can an order wait even when I have the ingredient?

The item may not match the exact material/filter, may be inaccessible or reserved, or the assigned workshop and worker may not be eligible. Inspect the task's displayed requirements and status.

Where can I ask players about a stalled order?

Use the linked Steam Discussions. Posts are player-submitted and unverified; include build, mode, status text and a reproducible example, not private credentials or save files.
