Solve darkness before choosing a home

The clock moves through day, dusk and night. The community day-night reference warns that total darkness triggers Charlie's attack and prevents normal interaction. You cannot recover a poor first-day route by deciding to build an elaborate base when the night is already dark. Carry light before committing to a distant detour.

The consulted Torch entry gives two Cut Grass and two Twigs as the basic recipe. Exact gathering opportunities differ by generated world. The crucial check is whether the Torch is actually craftable in your inventory while there is still daylight, not whether you intend to collect the ingredients later.

  1. Watch the in-game clock and collect Cut Grass and Twigs early. Craft a Torch while there is still time to correct a missing ingredient.
  2. Keep a simple return route to a known safe area rather than following every road until dusk.
  3. Gather food and materials opportunistically, but do not spend all of your daylight on a Science Machine or decorative base before light is secured.
  4. At dusk, decide: use portable light for a short controlled move, or settle by a reliable light source. Do not plan a long unlit return.
  5. After the night, scout nearby resources and place a Science Machine where it will help prototype the recipes you actually need.

Decide from the clock and your inventory

The Science Machine page describes standing nearby to prototype new recipes, after which the character remembers them. That is a useful progression step, but it does not erase night risk. Treat the first Science Machine as a tool for the next few days, not proof that a spot must become your permanent base.

If your chosen survivor has a different light ability or you changed world settings, adjust the route to what your installed game shows. The reason for this checklist is to force an explicit light decision before the map and clock remove your options.

Worked example: do not trade a Torch for a workbench

Illustrative decision, not played footage: it is dusk, your inventory has a Gold Nugget and four Logs, but only one Twig. The cited Science Machine recipe also needs four Rocks, and your Torch needs two Twigs plus two Cut Grass. Walking farther for Rocks while still missing light solves the wrong problem. Search locally for the missing Torch material first; if a light source is already available, use it rather than treating an incomplete Science Machine plan as shelter.

After a safe night, resume material collection and prototype a concrete item you need. Keep the permanent base decision separate from the recipe-unlock decision.

If you still die at night

Record the character, world settings, clock phase, whether your Torch was actually equipped, and whether it burned out. This separates an uncrafted Torch, a late departure and a durability problem. A screenshot with the clock and inventory is more diagnostic than 'night is unfair'.

What failed first:

Before you play

  • A portable light is craftable before dusk.
  • The route back is known or a safe light source is ready.
  • Recipe prototyping is not confused with nighttime protection.
  • Permanent base choice is made after some scouting.

Frequently asked questions

Should I build a Science Machine on day one?

Only if the light and route problem is already solved. It unlocks recipes but is not a substitute for a lit night.

Does a Torch last all night?

Do not assume it will. The consulted page describes limited burn time, so check durability and have another light plan.

Does this work in single-player Don't Starve?

The darkness principle is shared, but this guide is scoped to DST and uses a DST-specific Science Machine source. Recheck recipes and world rules for other editions.
