Cult of the Lamb co-op preflight

Choose your intended path. This cannot detect a controller, platform feature, save, or Remote Play session.

ready to configure

The FAQ's documented next step is to load a save, pause, and configure co-op. Player 2 joins as the Goat; this checker cannot see whether the controller is actually recognized.

Massive Monster's Unholy Alliance FAQ

Choose local co-op or Steam Remote Play

The developer's FAQ says to plug in an extra controller and configure co-op in the pause menu. One player controls the Lamb and the second the Goat. The Steam page calls the campaign local co-op and lists Remote Play Together; Massive Monster clarified that Remote Play streams the local mode rather than adding native online matchmaking.

What you wantSupported route in the cited guidanceWhat not to assume
Two people at one deviceLocal co-op; connect the extra controller and use the pause-menu co-op setupThat every platform has identical controller prompts
A friend joining from elsewhere on PCSteam Remote Play Together streams the local sessionThat this is a native online lobby or cross-platform matchmaking
Both Remote Play players use keyboardsDeveloper warned Steam can treat them as the same keyboardThat adding a second keyboard always creates an independent player slot
A native online invite/lobbyNot documented as a native online mode in the cited FAQDo not confuse Steam Remote Play with built-in online co-op

Start the second player from an existing save

The FAQ's flow begins after loading a save. If the Goat does not appear, check the input device is connected before opening the pause menu, then look for the co-op setup action. Names and controller labels may differ by platform; stop if your menu does not match rather than guessing at a save or DLC problem.

  1. Update the game through your platform and load the save you intend to share.
  2. Connect the second input device first; on a PC Remote Play session, invite the other player through Steam Remote Play Together.
  3. Pause the game and use its co-op setup option to add Player 2.
  4. Confirm which player is the Lamb and which is the Goat, then test one low-risk movement/action before starting a difficult Crusade.
  5. If the second input is not independent, test a controller for one player; the developer specifically notes a two-keyboard limitation for Steam Remote Play.
  6. If the platform offers no matching menu or input prompt, record platform, build, connection type and controller arrangement before reporting it.

Use the preflight without implying a live connection

The local checker does not discover your controllers, Steam session, platform feature support, or connected friend. It can only call out when the selected plan conflicts with the documented local/Remote Play distinction.

Scope and limits

The FAQ is dated and menu wording may change. Steam Remote Play is relevant to Steam/PC; the guide does not infer that another store, console, or platform has the same remote-streaming path. Local co-op is not represented as a separate online save or a cross-platform service. No play session was performed.

Before you play

  • Use the pause menu after loading a save to configure the second local player.
  • Player 2 joins as the Goat; the primary role is the Lamb.
  • Steam Remote Play Together streams local co-op on PC; it is not native online matchmaking.
  • If Remote Play merges two keyboard inputs, test one controller as the developer suggests.
  • The local checker cannot inspect your platform, devices, game version or friend connection.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cult of the Lamb online co-op?

The cited developer FAQ describes local co-op and Steam Remote Play Together on PC. Massive Monster said Remote Play is how a remote friend can join; that is not a native online lobby.

How does Player 2 join?

The developer FAQ says to connect an extra controller, load a save, pause, and configure co-op. Player 2 takes the Goat role.

Can two friends use keyboards through Steam Remote Play?

The developer noted that Steam may recognize both as the same keyboard. Try one controller for one player and follow current Steam Remote Play guidance.

Does the checker know if my controller works?

No. It checks only the selections you enter; it cannot inspect devices, Steam, saves, or your game.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 6, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Massive Monster: Unholy Alliance & Pilgrim DLC FAQ (Official)

The developer/community-manager FAQ describes adding Player 2 from the pause menu, one Lamb and one Goat, local co-op, and Steam Remote Play on PC. A separate Aug 12, 2024 reply by Massive_CM on this same thread says two keyboards may be recognized as one in Steam Remote Play; treat that as dated Steam-input guidance, not a Cult-specific guarantee. Recheck current menus and notices if they differ.

  2. Cult of the Lamb: Steam store feature and Unholy Alliance description (Official)

The Steam listing describes the campaign as local co-op, one Lamb and one Goat, and lists Shared/Split Screen Co-op and Remote Play Together features. The store feature tags do not establish native online matchmaking.
