Read the map before choosing a memorized sequence
World's Edge's introductory Random Map lesson prioritizes exploration, a nearby forest for wood, food sources, and then gold and stone. That order is a useful checklist for noticing what your generated map offers; it is not a guarantee that every map spawns the same resources in the same places.
The official September 2026 update changed map generation and random-map scripting, among other fixes. That is a concrete reminder to base scouting on the current match rather than assume an old screenshot or map script describes your seed.
| Look for | Why it matters in the lesson | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Population room / houses | New villagers need available population space | Check the population bar and queue state before the next queue stalls |
| Nearby forest | Official lesson lists a close forest as an early scouting priority | Choose a safe, practical Lumber Camp site after confirming the forest |
| Food: herdables, hunt, berries or other map source | Food supports early economy and advancement decisions | Use resources actually visible on this seed; don't force a route for absent animals |
| Gold and stone | The lesson recommends identifying them for later use | Note location and exposure; decide later when your strategy needs them |

A source-based first-minute sequence
- At the Town Center, check the villager queue and population cap. The tutorial says the first Random Map tasks include training Villagers and building Houses; if the civilization starts at its population limit, the lesson notes Loom as an alternate use of that opening time.
- Move the starting Scout Cavalry or Eagle Scout to reveal terrain in expanding sweeps around the Town Center. Keep it alive and watch its position; the tutorial explicitly warns it can be killed.
- Record the nearest practical food sources and whether herdables can be brought back. Do not assign a food route based on a resource that did not generate.
- Locate a nearby forest, then decide where a Lumber Camp can be placed without making villagers walk needlessly or expose them to an obvious threat.
- Mark gold and stone positions for later planning. Their location is information, not an instruction that you must mine both immediately.
- After this scan, choose a civilization- and map-appropriate plan from the current game state; do not treat this generic checklist as a fixed villager allocation or timing script.

Worked example: your expected food source is missing
Suppose you queue a familiar opening but the scout does not find the herdables you expected near the Town Center. Do not keep following the route as if the map must match a reference. Check which food sources actually spawned, return the scout to safe exploration, and adapt the economy to the visible map. World's Edge teaches scouting precisely so players can identify resources instead of assuming identical layouts.
Similarly, if the starting villagers already fill the population cap, the official lesson's Loom exception is more relevant than an unconditional villager queue. The correct response depends on the displayed population and civilization, not a universal timer.
| Observed condition | What the official lesson supports | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| No expected nearby hunt | Scout for actual food and bring back available herdables | Pretending a specific spawn is guaranteed |
| A closer safe forest appears elsewhere | Prioritize locating forest and choose a practical camp site | Placing from memory without checking the current seed |
| Population is capped at match start | The lesson says Loom can use the time before continuing the villager queue | Calling this the correct choice for every civilization or mode |
| Gold/stone are distant or exposed | Record their location for later decisions | Mining them immediately just because the checklist mentions them |

Keep map and build-version context with your notes
If comparing two openings or asking for advice, record Random Map versus another mode, 1v1 versus team settings, map name, civilization, and the displayed game build. Current updates may alter map generation, pathfinding, balance and lobby options; World's Edge publishes dated patch notes to document changes.
A player forum can offer ideas, but build orders and spawn assumptions are not official guarantees. Use those discussions as hypotheses to test in your own practice match.

Before you play
- I confirmed the mode, map, civilization and starting settings for this match.
- I checked Town Center queue and population space before repeating a memorized order.
- I used the starting Scout/Eagle to locate resources actually present on this map.
- I identified a practical nearby forest and available food before assigning villagers by habit.
- I marked gold and stone for later rather than treating their presence as an immediate mining order.
- I checked official update notes when using older map-generation advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an optimal AoE II build order?
No. It is an introductory resource and scouting checklist based on World's Edge Learn to Play lessons, not a tested or optimized build order.
Should I always queue a Villager first?
The official lesson says to begin a standard Random Map by training villagers and building houses, but it also notes a population-capped civilization may use the opening window to research Loom. Check your actual starting state and civilization.
Does every Arabia or Random Map spawn the same food and forest?
No such guarantee is made here. Scout the resources on the current generated map; official update notes document map-generation changes over time.
Can I follow the same controls on console?
The linked Learn to Play pages are PC-oriented in places. The priorities still help as concepts, but check your platform's current controller bindings and UI.
