Pick the transfer that matches the save you want
The island transfer moves the shared island as a whole. Individual-resident transfer moves one eligible player to an island on another console. These are not interchangeable backups: choose by who should keep playing on the original island and whether the resident is the island representative.
| Your goal | Use this path | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the console and keep the existing island | Whole-island transfer | The island is removed from the source after transfer; target's existing ACNH save may need deletion |
| Move one resident to a different island | Individual-resident transfer | Resident must already have a house; representative cannot move alone |
| Move the representative with the island | Whole-island transfer | Do not start a resident-only request |
| Protect against loss without changing consoles | Island Backup | Periodic online backup is different from a console-to-console transfer |

Preflight both systems before opening the tool
Nintendo's instructions require access to both source and target. The individual-resident route requires local wireless; the whole-island transfer requires wireless connectivity on both systems. Check software and target contents first, and make sure you know which console is source and which is target.
- Write down the goal: whole shared island, or one resident. If moving a resident, confirm they are not the island representative and already live in a house.
- Charge and bring both systems together; install Animal Crossing on both and enable the connection requirements Nintendo lists for the chosen flow.
- On the target, check for any existing Animal Crossing island/save data you want to retain. Nintendo warns that target save data may have to be deleted for a full island transfer.
- For a whole-island move, launch Nintendo's Island Transfer Tool on both consoles and follow the official source/target prompts. For a resident move, initiate 'Move to a new island' from the source title-screen Settings and accept the request on the target.
- Read the final island/resident names and destination carefully. Stop if they do not match your plan; the resident transfer cannot be canceled after the final confirmation, and the whole island leaves the source.
- Afterward, verify the island or resident on the target and re-enable Island Backup there if it was enabled on the old console.

Backup is a separate safety layer
Nintendo says island backup saves periodically when the game is not being played and the console is connected to the internet. Enabling it requires a resident Nintendo Account with active Nintendo Switch Online. It is not an on-demand duplicate and does not replace the official transfer process when both consoles are available. Check the title screen's last-backup time rather than assuming a toggle saved a fresh copy.

Use the local transfer planner
Choose the goal and mark what you have verified in the checklist below. It only applies Nintendo's documented decision rules to your answers; it cannot see your consoles, discover save data, or perform a transfer.
Before you play
- Choose whole island vs one non-representative resident before starting.
- Keep both source and target systems available and verify network/local-wireless requirements.
- Check target save data before consenting to any deletion.
- Stop before final confirmation if the displayed island, resident, or destination is wrong.
- After moving, confirm the target save and check Island Backup status again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move the island representative by themselves?
No. Nintendo says the representative cannot be transferred individually; move them with the whole island.
Can I cancel after confirming a resident transfer?
Nintendo says the transfer cannot be canceled once the source confirms the target in the final step.
Does Island Backup replace a transfer?
No. Backup is periodic recovery for a lost, stolen, or repaired console; Nintendo provides a separate tool to move an island between consoles.
Sources & revision notes

- Nintendo Support: Transfer an Island to Another Nintendo Switch System (Official)
Nintendo's island-transfer instructions checked November 6, 2026. Both source and target consoles are required; the island is no longer available on the source after transfer. Confirm the target contains no island save you need, because its existing ACNH data must be deleted to complete a transfer.
- Nintendo Support: Transfer an Individual Resident to a New Island (Official)
Nintendo's individual-resident transfer instructions checked November 6, 2026. The island representative cannot move alone; both systems and local wireless are required, and the transfer becomes non-cancelable at final confirmation.
- Nintendo Support: Back Up and Restore Island Save Data (Official)
Nintendo's Island Backup support article checked November 6, 2026. Backup is periodic while the game is not being played and the console is online; enabling it requires an eligible resident account and active Nintendo Switch Online. This is distinct from moving a live island between consoles.
