First classify the mod and where it should appear

The developer separates gameplay mods from cosmetic mods because they are enabled in different menus. A subscribed/downloaded mod can therefore be present on the client without being active in the saved world. For multiplayer, joining a modded server uses a separate confirmation prompt that downloads and enables the server's required mods.

Enable gameplay mods for the intended saved world

Use this order when hosting or starting your own world. The developer's guide says gameplay mods are enabled from Saved Worlds for each selected save; it does not claim that every mod is safe for every existing world. Read the mod's compatibility notes and retain a separate backup before changing a long-running campaign.

  1. At the title screen, open Mods to browse/search the library and select Subscribe for the mod you want.
  2. Wait for the download to finish, then open Saved Worlds and choose the intended world.
  3. Open that world's Mods menu, select the installed gameplay mod(s), and press Save.
  4. Host or load that same world and check a modded item/recipe tooltip to confirm what is from a mod; this is a menu check, not a compatibility certification.
  5. If the game updated and the mod is disabled, check whether its creator has updated it. The October 29 hotfix says outdated official mods remain automatically disabled until updated.

Cosmetic mods and gameplay mods are not interchangeable

Cosmetic mods are enabled from the Customization screen, not the per-world gameplay list. Deep Field says cosmetic mods are separated so players can move between saves without re-enabling them for every world. The visual result is shared only with players who also have the same cosmetic mod downloaded.

Join a modded server without guessing at its mod list

The official guide's player flow is short: choose Join, inspect the server's mod prompt and continue. The client automatically downloads and enables the required server mods. If the prompt is unexpected, stop and review what the server requests before continuing; this guide does not certify individual mod safety or server configuration.

  1. Select Join and read the mods listed in the server prompt.
  2. Continue only if you recognize and accept that mod set; the official guide says required downloads/enabling happen automatically after you continue.
  3. Wait for downloads to complete before rejoining or changing the local world’s own mod selection.
  4. If a required mod fails or a crash occurs, note the client build, mod name and server context. For unofficial mods, the developer states support is not provided; for official mods after an update, check the creator's compatibility status.

Before you play

  • I downloaded from the in-game library, then enabled gameplay mods for the specific saved world.
  • I used Customization for cosmetic mods and checked that friends downloaded the same cosmetic.
  • I reviewed the server mod prompt before continuing and did not treat it as a safety certification.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my subscribed gameplay mod not active?

The developer's instructions separate subscribing in the library from enabling the mod in Saved Worlds for the selected world; select it there and press Save.

Do all players need the same cosmetic mod?

The official guide says other players see the modded look only if they downloaded the same cosmetic mod.

Can I assume an official mod stayed active after the 1.5 update?

No. The October 29 hotfix notes say outdated official mods are automatically disabled until their creator updates them.
